RARE BIRD ALERT for a TROPICAL KINGBIRD seen from at least
October 30th through November 2nd on 64th Street in Delta, near
The intersection with 28th Avenue. Also, 2 CATTLE EGRETS were
reported in Surrey on November 2nd.
Out-of-town RARE BIRD ALERT for a BLACK VULTURE at Kincolith in
northwestern BC, present there since about October 1st.
Sightings for Sunday, November 2nd
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD found on October 30th was still present
along 64th Street in Delta.
Two CATTLE EGRETS, the first of the fall, were seen most of the
day in a farm field near 8068 188th Street in Surrey.
The GYRFALCON was observed again near the foot of 96th Street in Delta,
and a SNOW BUNTING was seen on the Roberts Bank coal port jetty.
Two BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS seen near Squamish were out of the usual
range for that species.
Sightings for Saturday, November 1st
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD in Delta was seen and photographed all day
by dozens of birders. It often stays low in the shrubbery for
extended periods of time, and has wandered as far as 300 metres
from the corner of 64th Street and 36th Avenue, but seems to like
the vicinity of that intersection.
Two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were also seen along 64th Street.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen in a large flock of blackbirds on
96th Street in Delta, and 4 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were seen in
probably the same flock along 88th Street.
Four BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were roosting along Fuller Slough
at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.
Sightings for Friday, October 31st
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD on 64th Street near 28th Avenue in Delta was
present all day and was seen and photographed by numerous birders.
The GYRFALCON was seen again near on the communication tower west of
the foot of 96th Street in Delta, and a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen
on the wires along 96th Street.
Sightings for Thursday, October 30th
A TROPICAL KINGBIRD, only the 4th Vancouver record, was found about noon
on 64th Street near 28th Avenue in Delta, near the Houweling greenhouses.
Two ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRDS were seen near the University of BC hospital
in Vancouver.
Sightings for Wednesday, October 29th
The adult GYRFALCON was seen again near the foot of 96th Street in
Delta. However, it is banded and may be an escaped falconer’s bird.
Sightings for Tuesday, October 28th
Out of town, the BLACK VULTURE at Kincolith in northwestern BC
was still present and was photographed again.

in Delta.
Sightings for Monday, October 27th
Five MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Blackie Spit Park in Surrey.
A single SNOW BUNTING was photographed on the Iona Island
South jetty in Richmond.
Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at the Tall Timbers
Golf Course in Langley.
At Boundary Bay Regional Park in Delta, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a
WESTERN MEADOWLARK, and 8 BRANT were seen.
Three RED KNOTS were seen among BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS perched on
top of pilings at the west end of River Road in Delta, near
Brunswick Point.
Two late SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were seen along the shore of Burrard
Inlet in Port Moody.
Sightings for Sunday, October 26th
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen with RED CROSSBILLS on top of
Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver.
Two SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Boundary Bay Regional Park
in Delta.
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, a BLUE GOOSE was seen with
SNOW GEESE, and 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and 8 SANDHILL
CRANES were also reported.
Sightings for Saturday, October 25th
A flock of 65 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were seen on Coliseum
Mountain in North Vancouver. This mountain is only accessible by a
long and strenuous hike from Lynn Creek.
Eleven BRANT were reported from Delta’s Boundary Bay Regional Park.
The BLACK VULTURE was still being seen at Kincolith in northwestern BC.
Sightings for Friday, October 24th
Three EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen with 9 MOURNING DOVES
along Highway 10 in Delta, west of 104th Street.
The GYRFALCON was seen perched on the communication tower west of
the foot of 96th Street in Delta.
No reports for Thursday, October 23rd
Sightings for Wednesday, October 22nd
The GYRFALCON was seen again near the foot of 96th Street in Delta.
Also in the area were at least 20,000 DUNLIN.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were seen at Colony
Farm Regional Park in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.
Sightings for Tuesday, October 21st
A GYRFALCON, the first of the fall, was seen near the foot of
96th Street in Delta.
At Iona Island in Richmond, a SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was seen
with 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS in the sewage ponds.
A BARRED OWL was observed at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.
At and near the foot of 64th Street on Boundary Bay in Delta were
a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 30 AMERICAN PIPITS, a WESTERN MEADOWLARK,
2 late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, and 2 LINCOLN’S SPARROWS.
No reports for Monday, October 20th
Sightings for Sunday, October 19th
A LONG-BILLED CURLEW and 4 MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Blackie Spit
Park in Surrey, as were a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, a NORTHERN SHRIKE,
a WESTERN MEADOWLARK and two late BARN SWALLOWS.
Four SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 10 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, both
late migrants, were seen among other shorebirds near the foot of 96th
Street in Delta.
A flock of 60 AMERICAN PIPITS and 15 LAPLAND LONGSPURS was seen in a
field east of 104th Street in Delta
Sightings for Saturday, October 18th
In the small community of Kincolith, at the mouth of the Nass River
in northwestern BC, the BLACK VULTURE which has been present since
about October 1 was still present and was photographed again.
A SNOW BUNTING, the first of the fall, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR
were seen on the Iona Island south jetty in Richmond.
In the Washington Cascades south of Manning Provincial Park, at Harts
Pass, the NORTHERN HAWK-OWL present near the Meadows Campground since
September 27th was seen again.
On Westham Island in Delta, 18 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS and a SHORT-EARED
OWL were seen.
Sightings for Friday, October 17th
A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, a casual species in the Vancouver area
(not seen every year) was well seen in the Spanish Banks area of
Vancouver, in large Douglas firs across the road from 4550 NW
Marine Drive.
