Hello birders! This is the Victoria Natural History Society's Rare Bird
Alert for Friday, June 6, 4 pm update. Compiled and transcribed by David
Allinson.

Friday, June 6
BLACK SWIFTS were reported by different observers at Swan Lake Nature
Sanctuary in Saanich. In the morning 3 were observed and later in the day 13
were tallied. Also present was an AMERICAN KESTREL. At nearby Christmas
Hill, a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE was heard.
A male NORTHERN HARRIER continued in the Martindale Valley of Central
Saanich.

Thursday, June 5
Unusual for June, 5 BRANT were on the rocks at Clover Point off Dallas Road
along the Victoria waterfront.

Wednesday, June 4
RARE BIRD ALERT: A report has been received for a possible PAINTED REDSTART
in the Cobble Hill area. The bird was observed at the corner of Cobble Hill
Road and Cameron-Taggart Road. Confirmation is requested. This would be an
exceptional record and would only represent the second record for the
province!

Tuesday, June 3
Unusual for the time of year was a male NORTHERN HARRIER over the Martindale
Valley of Central Saanich.

Monday, June 2
RARE BIRD ALERT: A possible ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was observed near the
16th hole of the Cowichan Golf and Country club south of Duncan.
Confirmation is requested.
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was with Brewer's Blackbirds along Lochside
Drive at the model airplane field between Martindale and Island View Beach
Roads in the Martindale Valley of Central Saanich.

Sunday, June 1
4 BANK SWALLOWS were over Swan Lake in Saanich in the evening hours when
swallows often concentrate here in numbers.
A female BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was at Jordan River on southern tip of Vancouver
Island.

Saturday, May 31
RARE BIRD ALERT: A singing CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at Swan Lake Nature
Sanctuary in Saanich. The bird was near the grove of tall firs between the
jogging path and the south end of the floating bridge.
3 RED-EYED VIREOS were tallied at Cowichan Bay just opposite the turn off to
the Cowichan Bay Dock Road south of Duncan.
A female LAZULI BUNTING was at Providence Farm off Tzouhalem Road in Duncan.
