This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

Belated reports: On August 13 5 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, 1 MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER
(in a manzanita brush field), and 8 CEDAR WAXWINGS were the highlights from
birding Horse Mountain (Tom Leskiw, Gary Bloomfield).
On August 13th 60 BULLER'S SHEARWATERS in the vicinity of 40 degrees,49
minutes north,
124 degrees 23 minutes west, which is about 5 miles out and slightly
north of the jaws - Humboldt Bay. Other species included RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, NORTHERN FULMAR (3), PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS (3), BLACK-FOOTED
ALBATROSS (1) [Paul Roush via NWCALBIRD].
14 Aug.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and a SNOWY PLOVER with fledged chicks were the
highlights from a South Spit survey (Kerry Ross).
15 Aug.
------------
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the CRESTED CARACARA* continued at the Alexandre Dairy,
in the Smith River Bottoms, near Fort Dick. To see the spot, look over and
behind the north end of the pond from the pullout along Lower Lake Road.
There is a concentration of Turkey Vultures there at a cow carcass compost
pile to the right side of the base of the living Sitka Spruce and snag grove
(Alan Barron ).
At the Yulethorn river access, near Orleans, 1 immature WILLOW FLYCATCHER,
and 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were the highlights. In SISKIYOU COUNTY 4
Rufous/Allen's Hummingbirds were seen. Back in HUMBOLDT COUNTY, 7-10
Rufous/Allen's Hummers were 1/3 way down Akins Creek (Tom Leskiw).
16 Aug.
------------
A 1.5 hour seawatch from the South Jetty of Humboldt Bay produced the
following highlights: 1 WANDERING TATTLER, 20 RED PHALAROPES, 1 RHINOCEROS
AUKLET, and 6 MARBLED MURRELETS. Later, the observer saw 30-40 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES along the V Street Loop (Scott Carey).
In TRINITY COUNTY, 2 juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen at Echo Lake,
Trinity Alps Wilderness (Justin Garwood fide Chet Ogan via NWCALBIRD).
17 Aug.

In TRINITY COUNTY 9 WOOD DUCKS were seen outside of Hyampom, by the Mule
Bridge on the south fork of the Trinity River (Tom Leskiw).
18 Aug.

A RED-EYED VIREO was heard singing and seen near the bridge crossing the Mad
River in Blue Lake (Ken Irwin). This is probably the same bird the observer
might of had a couple of weeks ago and heard only by another observer about
1 month ago.
An adult LARK SPARROW, a rare coastal migrant, was found at the Trinidad
State Beach parking lot, in Trinidad (Rob Fowler).
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE and 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
and 1 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE were the highlights from birding Shay Park in
Arcata for 1.5 hours (Scott Carey).
A female COMMON GOLDENEYE continued at the Arcata Oxidation Ponds (Ken
Burton via NWCALBIRD).
19 Aug.
------------
The CRESTED CARACARA* continues in DEL NORTE COUNTY, being seen in spruce
snag grove north of the large pond at the Alexandre Dairy. There were also 2
juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS in the large pond at the dairy. At Point
Saint George, there were 3 adult PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS along the beach to
the north of the point (Alan Barron).
A male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH was with other goldfinches in a large thistle
patch along Lower Lake Road by the Tedson Ranch in the northern Smith River
Bottoms (Lucas Brug).
20 Aug.
------------
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a juvenile STILT SANDPIPER was found in the large pond
at the Alexandre Dairy. There was also a juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
along Pebble Beach Drive in Crescent City. (Lucas Brug).
A BREWER'S SPARROW was seen along the Bowlby Bar, near Founder's Grove, in
southern Humboldt County. The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Shay Park
in Arcata (Ken Burton via NWCALBIRD). More info on these sightings can be

A CATTLE EGRET was seen at Klopp Lake, at the Arcata Marsh, and a PEREGRINE
FALCON was seen along the V Street Loop (Kerry Ross).
The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Shay Park in Arcata. The bird was
seen with a mixed flock near the east end of the park, near the easternmost
pond (Alexandra Lamb).
21 Aug.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found on the beach just
north of the mouth of Lake Talawa (Lucas Brug).
A migrant CASSIN'S VIREO was found in the local chickadee flock in the
riparian behind the Six River Supervisors Office, along Bayshore Way in
Eureka (Tom Leskiw).
22 Aug.

Another STILT SANDPIPER was found in DEL NORTE COUNTY, this one being seen
along Elk Creek before it empties into Crescent City Harbor; it was best
seen from the area of the city swimming pool (Alan Barron).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the CRESTED CARACARA* is still being seen in the area of
the dead snags at the Alexandre Dairy (Alan Barron).
The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Shay Park, in Arcata. The bird was
seen in western end of the park near the westernmost pond (Steve Bailey).
A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was an interesting find at the mouth of Willow Creek,
near the town of Willow Creek (Tom Leskiw).
Around 2,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS were observed during a 1.5 hour whalewatch
from Table Bluff. In one minute about 450 were seen with another 200 on the
water (Matt Wachs).
23 Aug.

A female HOODED WARBLER was seen out in the Blue Lake Cottonwoods area. The
bird was seen about 50 meters west of the first entrance to the cottonwoods
immediately after the bridge crosses the Mad River (Rob Hewitt, Ken Burton).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found along the beach
about 1/4 mile south from the mouth of the Smith River [Ed (last name?) and
Susan (last name?)]
