       This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
 California  Bird     Alert   , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
       Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern  California  as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern  California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California     Bird   Records Committee review species

5 Sept.
------------
Two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS, and a possible PHILADELPHIA VIREO were at the Orick
Dump. An adult male CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was at the Oxbow patch (Ken
Irwin).

A RUFF was at the Ocean Ranch unit, Eel River Wildlife Area  (Sean
McAllister).

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at the southeast corner of the Butcher Slough Log
Pond at the Arcata Marsh (Stan Harris).

6 Sept.
------------
Four BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERs were on the beach about 1/2 mile north of the
Eel River Mouth (Sean McAllister).

7 Sept.
------------
A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found late afternoon at Cooper Gulch in Eureka.
The bird was off of the little slit trail that leads from near the
intersection of 8th and R streets (Sean McAllister).

8 Sept.
------------

The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continued at Cooper Gulch and was seen at various
times throughout the day. A hatch-year female CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was
also found in the same flock (Rob Fowler, Alex Lamb, Larry Maurin, Scott
Carey, mob).

Near the town of Orick, a hatch-year CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was seen at the
Oxbow Patch. A BLUE-HEADED and 2 CASSIN'S VIREO was seen at the Orick Dump
(Ken Irwin).

Also near Orick, a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE has been present at a residence
near the Skunk Cabbage Trail. At least 2 birds have been present for 2 weeks
(Colleen Kelley-Marks).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a PROTHONOTARY and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER were found at
the doctors office at Point Saint George. The residents here were not
appreciative of the birding here and unfortunately chased off the observers.
This situation does not occur in most occasions birding there. The CRESTED
CARACARA*, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were at the
Alexandre Dairy in the Smith River Bottoms. A LEACH'S STORM-PETREL was seen
flying up Elk Creek in Crescent City and a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was found at
the Elk Creek Wildlife Area (Todd, Tanner and Tayla Easterla, John Hunter).

A LARK SPARROW and a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER were at a residence off of
Zehdner Avenue in Arcata (Gary Bloomfield).

9 Sept.
------------

The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continued  at Cooper Gulch in Eureka (Daryl
Coldren, mob). A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was also found at the park (Todd
Easterla fide Daryl Coldren).

The CRESTED CARACARA*, 1 juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and 1-2 WILSON'S
PHALAOPES were present at the Alexandre Dairy in DEL NORTE COUNTY. A female
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen on the road to the mouth of Lake Talawa
(Keith Slauson).

A well-described PHILADELPHIA VIREO and BLACKPOLL WARBLER were seen in a
chickadee/warbler flock at Mad River County Park. Neither bird could be
refound with much searching (Scott Carey).

A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER, 1 each of a STILT and BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were seen
at the Eel River Wildlife Area [Ocean Ranch (Sean McAllister)].

An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen in the Azalea Hill vicinity of McKinleyville
(Gary Lester).

10 Sept.
------------

The juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT* was present once again in the lower Mad
River Estuary in the morning after being absent for some time (Keith
Slauson).

Three to 4 BOBOLINKS were present along 819 Mad River Road in the Arcata
Bottoms. A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was found at Mad River County Park and
another CHESTNUT-SIDED was found at the west end of Ocean Avenue in
McKinleyville (Todd & Tanner Easterla fide John Hunter)

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE were in
the large pond at Alexandre Dairy; 4 YELLOW HEADED BLACKBIRDS were also in
the vicinity. At Point St. George 4 COMMON TERNS were seen (Lucas Brug).

11 Sept.
------------
An impressive fallout of migrants were found in Trinidad on a misty, foggy
day. At Trinidad Pier parking lot 30 species were in view with the
highlights being a immature female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER,  a
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS and a CASSIN'S VIREO. Also
interesting was a PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER feeding young? Near the
intersection of Stagecoach and Rainbow Lane a TENNESSEE WARBLER, a NORTHERN
PARULA, a BAY-BREASTED and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER were present amongst
other migrants (Melody Hamilton).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY, a RUFF, 2 juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and a
WILSON'S PHALAROPE were present at the large pond at Alexandre Dairy. (Lucas
Brug).

Also in DEL NORTE COUNTY, a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was seen along Enderts
Beach Road  (Alan Barron, Eileen Cooper).

12 Sept.
------------
At a residence in McKinleyville, a hatch-year male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was
found with a small flock that also had a Yellow, Townsend's, and
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS (Kerry Ross, Daryl  Coldren).

Three STILT SANPIPERS were present in the easternmost pond at Ocean Ranch
(Sean McAllister).

13 Sept.
------------
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a juvenile CURLEW SANDPIPER* was found and videotaped
late afternoon at the large pond at Alexandre Dairy but didn't stay long due
to constant harrassment from Peregrine Falcons. Also present here was a
RUFF, a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE (Lucas Brug).

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was along Waddington Road in the Ferndale Bottoms (Rob
Hewitt, Daryl Coldren, Gretchen & Brit Obrien).

Three WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, and a PRAIRIE WARBLER were seen
in the riparian at intersection of Bald Hills Road. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was
near the mouth of Redwood Creek. Three WILLOW FLYCATCHERS and an adult
BARRED OWL were seen at the Oxbow patch near the mouth (Ken Irwin).

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at the Eureka Marsh (Tom Leskiw).

14 Sept.
------------
A NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was heard in the Arcata Community Forest (Ben Zyla).

A RED-EYED VIREO was seen along the main trail at Mad River County Park
(Adam Walksville).

The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continued at Cooper Gulch in Eureka (David Fix,
Kerry Ross, Rachel Smith).

Six BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen along the lower Mad River Estuary (Kerry
Ross, Rachel Smith).

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen at the observation blind along the main
trail at the Salmon Creek Unit of Humboldt Bay NWR (Sean McAllister). The
bird has been present for a couple of days (fide Steve Lewis).

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at Cooper Gulch, probably the same one seen on
the 9th (Sean McAllister).

An early GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen in the Azalea Hill vicinity of
McKinleyville (Gary Lester).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found at the large pond at
Alexandre Dairy and was seen next to the continuing RUFF (Allan Barron).

15 Sept.
------------
A juvenile BALD EAGLE with orange tags with the number 76 was seen at the
end of Mad River Road (Friday Oumani?).
Note: This bird was fostered into a nest on Catalina Island earlier this
year (fide Dr. Peter Sharpe, Institute for Wildlife Studies).

A NORTHERN PARULA was seen at Mad River County Park about 50 yards down the
main trail from the parking lot (Lucas Brug).

A hatch-year male AMERICAN REDSTART was at the Horse Pasture Willow Patch on
the North Spit (Scott Carey).

The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continued at Cooper Gulch in Eureka (Matt Wachs).

A WILLOW FLYCATCHER and a FOX SPARROW were seen at Cock Robin Island in the
Loleta bottoms (Sean McAllister).

16 Sept.
------------
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at the Moxon Dairy in the Arcata
Bottoms (Gary Bloomfield).

An unidentified CUCKOO and WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at the north end of
Crannell road, next to the Little River (Scott Carey).

A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was near the mouth of Redwood Creek (Tom Leskiw).

A female SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at the end of Port Kenyon Road in the
Ferndale Bottoms. A VESPER SPARROW was seen adjacent to the Ferndale Sewage
Treatment Ponds and a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was seen at the
intersection of Fulmor and Port Kenyon Road (Owen Head).

About 600 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and 1 adult POMARINE JAEGER were seen off of
Table Bluff. Four SNOWY PLOVERS, a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER, a BAIRD'S, a
BUFF-BREASTED, and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 1 DUNLIN were at either the
the salt marsh area or on the beach at the Eel River Wildlife Area (Ocean
Ranch). One YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 1 PALM WARBLER were in the Salmon
Creek Riparian (Sean McAllister, Amber Transou).

A 2.5 hour seawatch from the North Jetty produced 200-300 SOOTY SHEARWATERS,
many WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 7 RED-THROATED LOONS, 1 RED-NECKED GREBE, and 1
adult PARASITIC JAEGER. The only highlights from birding the north spit
willow patches were an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at the Horse Pasture willows.
One EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE and a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER were seen in the
town of Manila (Scott Carey).

17 Sept.
------------

The PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continued at Cooper Gulch in Eureka; it was seen in
the canopy above the creek in between frisbee golf holes 8 and 9 (Gary
Lester).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER continued at the large pond
at the Alexandre Dairy. Four PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 1 DUNLIN, and other
shorebirds were at the ponds at the end of Pala Road (Lucas Brug).

One early FOX SPARROW was at the Eureka Marsh (Tom Leskiw).
