Welcome to the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert for November 2, 2008, sponsored by the

From around the state recent sightings are:
In Washington Co., 9 Great-tailed Grackles were seen in a small horse pasture
just south of Greenland on highway 71.
An adult Laughing Gull was seen at the pond behind the middle school on Parkway
in Russellville (Pope Co.). Also seen were 7 Franklin's Gulls, a couple hundred
Ring-Billed Gulls and a single Herring Gull.
At Bald Knob NWR in White Co. 6 Sandhill Cranes were relocated 1.5 miles west of
their previous location (the north side of Huntsman Road in the 2nd pond west
of its intersection with Coal Chute Road, just northwest and across Huntsman
Road from the grain bins) in a field on the south side of Huntsman Road, 0.5
mile east of Safley Road. Also at Bald Knob NWR, 2 Nelson's Sharp-tailed
Sparrows were in them middle of the first weedy field on the right (west) side
of Coal Chute Rd about 1/4 mile south of the grain bins.
An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) biologist identified a juvenile
Golden Eagle at Hope Upland Wildlife Management Area (WMA) from the parking lot
on the NW area of the WMA.
At Lake Millwood, a Brown Pelican was spotted perched on a branch in the
standing timber directly across the open water at Beard's Bluff Landing.
A Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow was seen at Woolsey Wet Prairie. The sparrow is
at the same location where two Bewick's Wrens were reported. The birds are
near the northeastern most pond, where there is a small berm which connects the
northern most berm and the one that surrounds the large middle pond
with trees. The wrens were scolding in the field to the east of the connecting
berm. In the NW part of the 30 acres there are 2 big willow trees just NW of a
pool in which a Least Bittern was seen, as well.
A Virginia Rail, the second county record for Faulkner County, was found at Bell
Slough WMA. A Virginia Rail was also seen at Two Rivers Park near Little Rock,
just as you enter the first swampy area about 10 or so yards past the vehicle
barrier. It was in the right side in the cattails.
