[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Le Conte's at Chesney Prairie From: Joe Neal <jneal(AT)FS.FED.US> Date: 30 Oct 2007 6:56am On Saturday October 27, Joe Woolbright, Mike Mlodinow, and I took a ramble down through Chesney Prairie Natural Area in Benton County. Most amazing to me: a minimum of 12-15 Le Conte's Sparrows. This is far and away the highest such count we have for the western Arkansas Ozarks. We either: (1) hit the migration peak, (2) in the best Le Conte's habitat, (3) an exceptionally good year for Le Conte's, (4) plain lucky, (5) it was Woolbright's birthday present. Maybe some or maybe all. Their fine colors are a nice match for the ripe native grasses, but they still stood up and out for us in the perfectly blue sky & sunshine.
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Ninestone field trip Saturday Nov. 17, 2007 9 AM From: Joe Neal <jneal(AT)FS.FED.US> Date: 30 Oct 2007 7:14am Everyone's invited to visit and go birding at the Ninestone Land Trust in southern Carroll County on Saturday, Nov. 17. We'll target starting at 9 am to give people time to drive over. This trip will be a joint undertaking of Don Matt & Judith Griffith of Ninestone and the Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society. The habitats are highly varied. There are birding opportunities for people of all skills and interests. You can wander the sandstone glades and upland fields or sit on the porch and watch the waterfalls for dippers (???). We will have a "pot luck" type lunch. This is a good chance to see some fantastic Ozarks countryside, and if you desire, learn about land trusts as a way to protect land with special values. For information about Ninestone: 870-545-3559 or waterfall(AT)hbeark.com. You do not need to register or call--just show up. 1.For those coming from Berryville or north- Directions from intersection of Hwy. 62 E & Hwy. 21 S just east of Berryville: From Hwy. 62 east of Berryville, take Hwy. 21 South for 10 + miles to the Cedar Creek Country Store on the RIGHT. IMMEDIATELY after the store & parking lot, turn RIGHT onto a gravel road. The gravel road is CR 512, but is not well marked, so just turn RIGHT immediately after the store. Do Not Cross the Bridge over Cedar Creek! Continue on the gravel road for 1 MILE, staying to the LEFT at any choices. You will pass 3 mailboxes on the LEFT, one is a large blue mailbox. Continue on to our log cabin on the LEFT. 2.For those coming from Fayetteville or South- Directions from intersection of Hwy. 412 & Hwy. 21 N: From Hwy. 412 take Hwy. 21 North for about 7 + miles. Cross the Cedar Creek Bridge first & turn LEFT onto the gravel road (CR 512) before you get to the Cedar Creek Country Store on the LEFT. Continue on the gravel road for 1 MILE, staying to the LEFT at any choices. You will pass 3 mailboxes on the LEFT, one is a large blue mailbox. Continue on to our log cabin on the LEFT.

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Sunday morning field trip to Kingfisher Trail From: Dottie Boyles <ams(AT)ARKMED.ORG> Date: 30 Oct 2007 1:45pm Good write up Barry! They should have been at the meeting! I think everyone had a good time on the AAS field trips. I saw several birds at Two Rivers Park on Sunday that I didn't see there Friday morning or on the field trip Saturday to Murray Park/Cook's Landing. I added Purple Finch, Lincoln's Sparrow and Winter Wren to my year list. Dottie Boyles Little Rock -----Original Message----- From: Barry Haas Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 9:53 PM Leslie & Others, The field trip to Pinnacle Mountain State Park wasn't posted on ARBIRD or anywhere else. The Arkansas Audubon Society (AAS) Fall meeting was held this past weekend at the Crowne Plaza Holiday Inn in west Little Rock. As is typical for most AAS meetings, Saturday field trips were part of the advance package that was in the AAS newsletter "Arkansas Birds" as well as provided in registration packets to folks who attended the meeting. Sunday field trips usually are decided on Saturday evening, depending on where folks would like to go Sunday morning. That's understandable as sometimes a rarity will be seen on Saturday and others hope to see it on Sunday. On Saturday evening several individuals, myself included, offered to lead field trips Sunday morning if folks wanted to visit some local birding spots. Leif Anderson offered to lead a trip to Willow Beach and nearby Terry Lock & Dam, Dan Scheiman led a trip to Two Rivers Park (a repeat of one of the Saturday field trips) and I offered to lead a group to the Kingfisher Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Of the roughly 75 folks registered for the meeting 8 went with me to the Kingfisher Trail Sunday morning. We spent roughly an hour birding the Kingfisher Trail where there was lots of activity, and then headed to the park visitor center and observation tower for another hour or so. Sometime before noon our group broke up and everyone headed for home (Magnolia, Chester, Hot Springs, Jasper and Ft. Smith) plus me in the woods just west of Little Rock. My reward? I got to show 8 of my good Audubon friends a spot (Kingfisher Trail) that only one had ever seen before. They all loved the giant cypress trees and setting beside the Little Maumelle River just as much as I do. The weather was splendid and our morning of birding outstanding, even with no rarities or lifers that I'm aware of. And the company was unsurpassed. That's why it is good to be a member of the Arkansas Audubon Society and attend the Spring and Fall Meetings. We have dinner and a program on both Friday and Saturday evenings plus field trips on Saturday and often Sunday as well. You can go to the AAS web site at: http://www.arbirds.org to learn about AAS and the meetings. Next spring the meeting will be in Ft. Smith the weekend of April 25-27. Meeting info will be in the March 15 issue of "Arkansas Birds" and may be on the web site prior to that issue of the newsletter. We do our best to make folks attending a meeting for the first time feel welcome. From the deep woods just west of Little Rock, Barry Haas

From: JoAnne Rife <RifeJA(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 30 Oct 2007 2:31pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I taught several sciences to high school students...but I'm out of the main stream now... Vinegar, the favorite of "Dear Abby" or whoever, is definitely reacting with calcium carbonate (limestone) and not algae!! I like Oxyclean very much for laundry; but I've thought it was a protein digester since it seems to get the things out of cloth that chlorine bleaches don't touch. It certainly feels like a protein digester!! If it is, it doesn't sound very good for birds??? So?? Since algae is a simple plant, but a living thing made of cells, it's going to be very difficult to avoid scrubbing with a physical hand rather than a chemical reaction!!
