[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Greater Yellowlegs From: Kelly Chitwood <kchitwood(AT)CABLELYNX.COM> Date: 3 Apr 2008 8:33am --Apple-Mail-1--858366052 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Scoped a flooded field in Ouachita County near the Ouachita River and found one Greater Yellowlegs. Was afforded about 15 minutes viewing time, which included opening two guides and my checklist for verification. I like it when birds hold still. It was comical, watching it bob up and down. Even my daughter, age 5, who's hard to please when it comes to birding was compelled to look. I've found that a sketch pad and pen can be the best form of entertainment when we're riding. A Great-crested Flycatcher's distinctive "wheeeep!" pierced the air. Northern Parulas were singing, Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Common Yellowthroat along with several White-throated Sparrows popped into sight when I pished. The Greater Yellowlegs continued to bob and feed. I decided to leave it alone. A beautiful creature with intricate marks and colorations that field guides can only imply. I can't wait to see what's there today! ASCA meets at 7:00pm the second Thursday of each month at the John Gould Fletcher Library, located at 823 Buchanan St. on the corner of Buchanan and H Streets in Little Rock. The next meeting will be April 10th. The meeting topic will be “Ecology of Prescribed Burning” presented by Roger Fryar, USDA Forest Service. Check the ascabird.org website for details on upcoming meetings and field trips. Due to extreme flooding at Cook’s Lake and the White River NWR, plus a massive inundation of buffalo gnats at Cook’s Lake, the April ASCA field trip location has been changed. The date is still April 12. Below are the details. (Woolly Hollow State Park is 12 miles north of Conway on Hwy. 65, then 6 miles east of Greenbrier, AR. on Hwy. 285.) We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the south end of the commuter parking lot at I-630 and Shackleford Road in Little Rock. We will arrive at Woolly Hollow State Park around 8:45 a.m. for those who would like to meet us there. Early spring migrants are our target birds. After birding Woolly Hollow, we will drive to Mayflower to eat lunch at the Glory B’s café. After lunch, we will head to the Camp Robinson Special Use Area to look for Bachman’s Sparrows. All birders are welcome to join us! For more information, contact Karen Holliday at karenh(AT)arkleg.state.ar.us. Don’t forget to register for the statewide meeting of Arkansas Audubon Society at Fort Smith on April 25-27th. Details are available at www.arbirds.org. From around the state recent sightings are: In Poinsett Co. at the bridge on Punkin Center Rd., an Eared Grebe (breeding plumage) and 5 Horned Grebes (nonbreeding and transitional plumage) were reported. In Russellville (Pope County), next to Arkansas Tech University’s ball fields along Hwy 124, there is a Merlin chasing small birds across the highway Thanks for calling the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert. I never made it past the drained pond. There were at least 6 kinds of shorebirds counting Killdeer. I need to look one of these up to make sure what it is but these are the ones I am sure of: Least Sandpiper about 12 Greater Yellow Legs 2 Lesser Yellow legs 1 A. Golden Plover 1 Killdeer several Semipalmated Sandpiper 1 black legs, straighter bill than Least. Last one It is the about the same size as the Lesser Golden Legs, legs were not yellow but greyish, bill is dull yellow at the face then black to tip (3/4 black.) It looked like it had black tail feathers. Solitary sandpiper? I did try to digiscope these and they were very close so I might have actually taken decent pictures. The golden plover was the furthest from me. Jacque. ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock. I emailed someone and asked what it was. I was told it was this type of goose and that it was not one to count. Well, to me, it was still special. I did find it in the books, after I looked at several. They are quite striking looking and the way they stand up instead of the normal way a goose walks, really makes you stop. Not everyone has gotten to see them. I understand that these have been "wild" in this area for many years now. So I think that is something too. That even though they may have started out as escapes, they have gone way past that. So do not feel bad about asking about them. Enjoy seeing them. I do. Everytime I am in town I try to get by to see if they are still there. Beverly Sullivan Marion, AR who visits in Rogers ************** Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: exotic waterfowl From: "Graves, Gary" <GRAVESG(AT)SI.EDU> Date: 3 Apr 2008 7:44pm Keeping exotic waterfowl is still a very popular hobby in North America and Europe. Every species that breeds naturally in the USA is kept in captivity (many species in large numbers) and most of the accidentals (e.g., Falcated Teal, Tufted Duck, Common Pochard, Smew, Barnacle Goose, etc.) are also held in surprising numbers. Anseriform hybrids are also created in sizeable numbers in captivity. Unbanded individuals escape from time to time. Those that aren't killed rapidly by predators are eventually observed by birders or shot by hunters. When are they countable? Countability is generally refereed by committee, most notably by the checklist committee of the American Ornithologist Union (dating back to the 1880s) and more recently by the American Birding Association. To be "countable," an exotic species has to have established a stable, self-sustaining population that persists for a period of decades. Most introduced species never reach the point of sustainability in mainland USA. Starlings, House Sparrows, Ring-necked Pheasant, Gray Partridge, and Mute Swan are examples of species that have self-sustaining populations and have been added to the AOU checklist. Only time will tell if the dozens of other exotic species introduced in the USA (e.g., parakeets, parrots, estrildid finches, pigeons, tanagers, etc.) establish sustaining populations. The general consensus in academic circles is that exotic species, regardless of their beauty, should not be permitted to establish footholds in North America. Why didn't Sibley illustrate the Ivory-billed Woodpecker? I would guess that he didn't include it for the same reason he omitted the Labrador Duck, Heath Hen, Great Auk, Passenger Pigeon, and Bachman's Warbler....too little space to include species that haven't been reliably reported in decades. I'm sure Sibley would be more than happy to include an Ivory-bill in the next edition of his book (especially if someone comes up with unequivocal proof of it's continued existence).
