Subject: Bona Dea Trails plus 4/5/2008
From: Jim Dixon <jamesdixonlr(AT)ATT.NET>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 3:48pm
Samantha and I left early and met Karen Holliday at 6:45 and then rode
with her to Bona Dea Trails where we met David Ray and Ted (last name
unknown). We birded the area with Yellow-crowned Night-Herons as the
target bird. We then visited a nearby Disk Golf course and finally swung
by Holla Bend NWR for Black-bellied Whistling ducks (found) and
Yellow-headed Blackbirds (not). Finished around 1 PM and headed home. I
saw 59 separate species. Thanks, Ted, for being our guide.

I wish you could have been here at my house day before yesterday. We had a
yellow crowned night heron in the tree across the street! My husband came and
got me to see what it was. I got a few pictures and then he left. Guess he
got tired of trying to fly in all the rain.

And I ended the day with a male INCA DOVE pursuing a
female in the trees at my house.
Hope to see you all in FS the end of this month.

Subject: Lake Atalanta, Saturday
From: Jacque Brown <bluebird2(AT)COX.NET>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 9:51pm
Joan Reynolds and I met at 8 am today to Bird the trails at Lake Atalanta, it
was 32 degrees when I left the house and the day loomed foggy and surreal but
burnt off in no time. We were very warm by 10 am.

E Towhee, got a bad picture but better than none

Yellow Throated Warbler
Pied-Billed grebe
Red Tailed hawk pair
Red Shouldered Hawk pair
Osprey
Y B Sapsuckers, a lot
Red bellied Woodpecker
A Piliated Woodpecker working a stump on the ground, Great pictures
We heard a Barred Owl hoot
and a N Parula sing
The E Towhee was actually new for me. Heard but not seen before.
Joan saw a Black Vulture too
We heard several birds in the trees we couldn't find and weren't good enough
with songs to ID.
We sat by the spillway for a good half hour and the area was alive with yellow
rumps, kinglets, swallows, and phoebes.
We also saw a butterfly fresh out of it's cocoon, either a comma or question
mark, the lower wings weren't open yet.
Also a red admiral, hackberrys and some sulfers.
Squirrels, grey and fox and Chipmonks.
The dogwoods are ready to bloom and small, beautiful, woodland wildflowers were
popping up everywhere.
