Saw my first Yellow Warbler of the season yesterday in Batesville - just
beautiful. Used to see tons of them in Montana when I lived there - don't
see as many of them here.

I was out in a Red-cockaded Woodpecker cluster yesterday evening near
Waldron, Ouachita NF -- saw, then heard, my first Prairie Warbler this
spring. They are common nesting birds here in the open, park-like mature
shortleaf pine forests with RCWs.

Subject
Migration count counties - May 12-13
- FINAL changes
Greetings all,
The 2008 Migration count is just around the corner. It is a great
opportunity to practice citizen science and get out and enjoy spring
migration.
It is much like a Christmas Bird Count, but on a county-wide level.
Mostly May 10th with a few counties counting on the 11th
Any skill level or amount of time would be helpful.
Keep track of hrs/ miles on foot, by car, ect.
Keep track of the number of birds by species.
The compilers send the data to me (preferably by mid June) and I add it to
the state database and do an article in AAS's newsletter, w/ copies to all
compilers.
You can enter your personal sightings into ebird and I'll enter the entire
count into ebird, back through 1992.
Please try to give your compiler plenty of time by letting them know ahead
of time if you want to help.
Generally we try to get one person to compile a county on one day. The
compiler assigns search areas and everyone sends their data to the
compiler.
Sometimes a person cannot find any help and does a county by themselves.
You will find more birds with multiple people, but the statistics will be
fine because of the hrs/miles completed.
Contact a compiler, or if you do not see your county listed let me know and
I will add you to the list.
Counties I've heard from so far:
county - date - compiler - contact info
Benton - 10th - Michael Mlodinow - mamlod(AT)hotmail.com
Faulkner - 10th - Martha Johnson - amjohnson(AT)conwaycorp.net 501-329-5214

Newton - 10th - Tim Barr - barrfam(AT)eritter.net

Pulaski - 10th - Dan Scheiman - birddan(AT)comcast.net
Washington - 10th - Michael Mlodinow - mamlod(AT)hotmail.com
Again, Everyone is welcome to participate. If you have any questions
please give me a holler.

As the temperature was plummeting in beautiful downtown Thornburg, Monday
night, I was surprised to hear a Whip-poor-will "whipping" furously.
Sounded like he was trying to get it done in a hurry before the temp
dropped any lower.

From: Dennis Braddy <dmbraddy(AT)MAC.COM>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 9:18am
Happy day! I woke up to find photos of the last two missing birds from
the Arkansas Birder Bird Identification gallery in my inbox - Black
Rail and White-throated Swift. We now have all 403. :-)
Now begins the long-term task of improving the ID albums with photos
illustrating additional plumages and field marks and substituting
photos taken in Arkansas for ones that weren't.
Please keep sending/sharing your photographs. Thanks.

The prairie field trip will depart from the Nature
Center parking lot at 8:30 instead of 7:00. Bill
Shepherd has agreed to lead that trip.
We are still in need of one more leader. If you would
like to direct a group to Sequoyah NWR or stay in the
Fort Smith area for some hot spots, those two spots
remain. I will lead which ever one is left.

Subject: Red-headed Woodpecker on Birdcam
From: Dennis Braddy <dmbraddy(AT)MAC.COM>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 10:44am
A Red-headed Woodpecker has visited our feeder several times each of
last 3 days. Would you believe it? We forgot to look at it on the
birdcam, so it's still not on the official list. This morning it got
into a fight with the Red-bellied Woodpecker over the peanut feeder.
If you saw the Red-headed Woodpecker on the birdcam or see it before
we do, let us know. We'll give you credit, until the next new birdcam
bird. :-) Also, look for hummers. Ruby-throated is not yet on the list
though we have several coming to their two feeders. It's only a matter
of time before one perches on top of the birdcam feeder.

I made a quick swing through the Centerton FH today and the highlight of the day
were two Cattle Egrets in breeding plumage, the beaks were still more yellow
than orange. I hadn't seen any since I've moved here in August so I don't know
how widespread they are.
There was also a DC Cormorant.
There was also a Canada Goose with a brown sock instead of black.
The wind is very strong today and all the other birds were laying low in the
grass. Jacque Brown, Bella Vista.

Subject: Arkansas Birder Gallery Update
From: Dennis Braddy <dmbraddy(AT)MAC.COM>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 6:37pm
Now that we have photos of all 403 birds on the AAS Field List in the
Arkansas Birder gallery, we have begun to make other changes. Album
Bird Identification 1 (BID1) now contains exactly one photo of each
bird in random order. Bird Identification 2 (BID2) contains birds from
BID1 showing different field marks or in different plumages. BID2
birds tend to be slightly harder to identify. The two BID albums are
intended as training tools. That's why the birds are in random order
and will be shuffled from time to time. :-) Album Alphabetic (new)
contains the same photos as BID1, but sorted by name (first name
first). We will add another album with the same photos, but sorted in
AOU order, eventually. iPhoto doesn't have a sort by AOU menu option,
so it will take awhile. :-(
If you have suggestions for other sorting orders or other views of the
data, let us know. In the meantime get cracking. Learn to identify (or
refresh your recollection of) all of Arkansas' birds, past and present.
