Subject: New Birdcam Birds
From: Dennis Braddy <dmbraddy(AT)MAC.COM>
Date: 18 Apr 2008 7:56am
Two days ago we added Red-headed Woodpecker to the birdcam list. This
morning an adult male Indigo Bunting perched atop the feeder array.
We've just missed Ruby-throated Hummingbird several times.

The three swans on Hurricane Lake near Benton turned out to be Mute Swans.
My friend that found them sent me a couple of pictures for ID purposes. They
have orange bills with black bases and long pointed tails. They came within
a few feet of him for food, so they aren't particularly wild. They may be
the same three swans that Karen Holliday reported as missing from the
Maumelle area since Easter. I posted two pictures of the birds at
www.ibwo.org/swans.php.
What is the law regarding Mute Swan protection, i.e. are they unprotected
like House Sparrows or are they afforded some protection as a game bird or
migratory bird? Also, are they good eatin'? :-)
Thanks.

I was on a fishing trip on Sunday April 6th on the west side of the Hwy
10 bridge in Lake Maumelle with friends. An Osprey put on quite a
display for us for nearly 5 hours soaring diving and fishing. The Osprey
finally came up with a fish seemingly bigger than the ones we were
catching. Two Common Loons also shared the water with us for several
hours at one point even coming within 50-60 feet of the boat.

Yesterday on my way to the GH Owl nest I was driving Holloway Rd just south of
the fish hatchery. An Osprey was standing on a very weathered dead tree at the
farthest point out on the branch he could be.
It gave an excellent view of those tremendous talons. I had watched an Osprey
fishing at the hatchery a few days prior to this and got an amazing view of the
dive technique they use.
Hopefully the gates will be open today and I can drive the hatchery. My
digiscoped photos of the Owlets turned out OK but I'm going to see if they are
looking my way today as I only got profiles and back shots yesterday . Jacque

I'm glad someone is having success with warblers. I've been going everyday
this week @ lunch & a couple of afternoons with hardly any success at all.
Last weekend @ Wooley Hollow was also unproductive. I have seen a
prothonotary warbler, a common yellow throat, & a n. parula. I have seen
tons of yellow-rumped warblers, blue-gray gnatcatchers, & white-throated
sparrows. Is it because it has been so windy & cool? Maybe this weekend
will be better.
