As Bo said these guys mass before moving. There are a large number in
the Lollie valley, and many are calling. Also along the roadways in town
where there are brushy fence lines the sparrows are abundant. They
disappear in about three weeks.

I know that chipping sparrows are probably not such a big deal for
most of you, but we just had one at our sunflower seed feeder and he
was beautiful. I have been here for over 9 years and have never seen
one here before. I just love sparrows! We are also having several
white-throated sparrows now.
The last two years we have had a pair of blue grosbeaks nesting here
and this year there are two pairs that we see at the feeder frequently.
Back to watching for the chipping sparrow again!

Subject: What Warbler Be This?
From: "George R. Hoelzeman" <uiogd(AT)ARKANSAS.NET>
Date: 30 Apr 2008 9:53am
OK - this bird was clearly demarking (demarcing?) territory in some of the small
oaks, so let me try this as systematically as possible:
Field Marks:
olive green, wing bars, darkish tail particularly toward the end, black,
warbler-like bill, head appeared to have lightish cheeks. Tail flickered when
it called.
Location:
Border area, oaks of approximately 15 years and about 15-20 feet tall. Bird
kept to middle, upper branches flitting from branch to branch except while
singing when it stopped motionless except for the flittering tail.
Call:
Beaing in mind I can't reproduce this exactly like it sounded with letters:
CHICKpeee, WIka - WI - kaa. The Wika part was very rapid.
This is about 3 miles south of Cleveland in north Conway Co. I'm going to watch
for it some more, but that's all I have for now.
Thanks
George (n. Conway Co. with swarms of Indigo Buntings)

Last weekend when we were trying to move my grandson's stuff to Fayeville,
there were about a dozen RB Gross beaks in my backyard! I could not stop and
admire like I wanted to. But I got some good pictures. Then yesterday evening
when I got home and went to see what was there I thought I had White crowned
sparrows but thought I was wrong since I have never had them here before.
Guess I was right! Thanks everyone for sharing!
We are heading off to FL on Sat. for three weeks of travel and birding. One
week will be spent in Key West. Anyone have any special places they suggest I
go to see good birds? We plan on going down the west coast and coming back
on the east coast. We will spend a day at the Ft. Myers area, going to Ding
NP, then to , Everglade City, hitting Shark Valley while there, then to
Homestead and the Everlgades. On the way back I only have plans so far for St.
Augustine. Any suggestions on some of your favorite locations would be
appreciated.
We leave early on Sat. morning but I will have my laptop on the trip. We
will go back out to the Dry Tortagus while in Key West. Any other places there
you suggest?
Thanks for any help.

I've spent the last eight winters in Florida, but never birded there in =
spring or early summer. You mention some places in you posting that I =
would include especially the Dry Tortugus. But I would also include =
Merritt Island near Cape Canaveral. My favorite. You can bird it by =
car easily, but a birding pal would be very helpful. For shorebirds I =
highlly recommend Ft. Desoto just south of St Pete. If you happen to be =

Walking this evening, Tom Fennell and I were thrilled to see a pair of
Mississippi Kites flying high over 18th and Arch Streets. Flying higher still
were a number of swifts. We walked by a large oak where a round ball of a
mockingbird sporting the shortest tail I have ever seen, hopped away from us up
a vine. We gave him a wide berth fearing attack by the mother crying warning
notes from the dense growth above.
This morning, I got off of my car in the parking garage, and heard geese, turned
in time to see a pair fly by headed southeast (they seem to always be going
that direction). I am constantly amazed at all the bird life in our town.

I took the dog for a little walk today and at the ever popular golf course saw
my first female orchard oriole. It was being courted by a male or I never would
have guessed what it was. I've seen lots of adult and juvi males before but
never a female.

This morning we had a Pine Siskin at the backyard feeder. It was the first
for the yard list in 2008. Then, this afternoon, a Swainson's Thrush showed
up in the street in front of the house. I took a picture and had Jack
Stewart verify it for me before putting it on this list. We also had
Lincoln's Sparrow, White-Crowned, White-Throats, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks,
Indigo Buntings, plus those we regularly see in our yard.
