In late March, the 3 trumpeter swans at the Mill Pond in Boxley Valley,
left their pond and the valley.
In mid-April, our Madison County wildlife officer confirmed (by reading
collar numbers) that three swans seen on private property on War Eagle
Creek were the swans from the Mill Pond.
On May 14, an observer discovered that the swan flock had grown from 3
to 13 - all wearing green collars. She read and recorded the collars
and I confirmed that 10 of the 13 swans released on Holla Bend Refuge
had flown to NW Arkansas and joined the Mill Pond 3!
Amazing!!
The observer and the landowner both noticed that the Holla Bend 10 and
the Mill Pond 3, while foraging and resting at the same site, were not
"hanging out" together.
The USFWS and AGFC are searching the refuge and surrounding private land
in order to see if the other 3 swans are still in the general area of
the release site.

Tuesday (5/13) my Rose-breasted Grosbeaks departed on the south wind before the
rain. The AAS Bird List shows normal time to be present as 4D-5B.
Since this is technically (according to the calender) the 3rd week of May, have
they extended the normal time of being present or since there was only one day
in the first week of the month should that week not be counted? How do we count
the weeks?

Subject: Nightbird surveys in AR. (long, but sure need your help.)
From: Leif E Anderson <leanderson(AT)FS.FED.US>
Date: 15 May 2008 9:24am
Greetings all,
Very few folks in AR have signed up to survey whip-poor-wills /
chuck-will-widows / common nighthawks and that's a shame..
Several of our neighboring states are doing much better.
In every bird census night birds are the least sampled and the least
understood. This survey can change this.
What is it:
A nationwide survey of nightjars.
Each route is only 9 miles long and will take about 1 1/4hrs to complete.
Some are based on Breeding Bird Routes so the data can be compared, but
most will be new user created routes. Would like to have 2 routes per
county.
You run the route 1 time per year after moon-rise and sun-set between
5/12 and 5/28 starting 8pm-2pm ending 2am-6am or 6/10 and 6/26 starting
8:30pm-1am, ending 1am-6am. (I can send the exact times for the
Russellville area.)
You use Google Earth, which is free, to plan your route.
You could easily adopt an existing one and plan another nearby, and run it
in one evening. Or if no existing ones are nearby then you could design 2,
close together and run them in one evening.
I know your busy, everybody is, but 1 evening isn't a great inconvenience.
Of course you could do more... I'm doing 9, and figure it will take me 4
evenings.
We only have to know 3 songs and only 2 of those can be confused.
Go to the website at "www.cc-wm.org/nightjar/ARmain.htm" for more
information.
Please don't be intimidated by the technology because the surveys are very
simple.
Live in a large town or city? No problem. Surveys certainly need
established specifically for C. Nighthawks.
Some of you may have visited the website and found the technology hard to
understand and intimidating .... gps & Google Earth.
A) If you would like to do a new survey, but worry about the technology,
then I can help you out.
Go to the website. review the information. Scout an area that you would
like to survey. Write down as much detail as you can about where the count
starts, how far between each stop, when you made turns, estimated distance
to rds or other landmarks that I might find on an aerial photo; Email me
the information; I'll put it into google earth, make the files and email
them (3K - small size) back to you; then you register and send the files
to the national coordinator.
B) If you would like to adopt an existing route, but worry about Google
Earth:
Look at the list below. I can pull up the route and write down the route
directions, so you don't have to do Google Earth.
Look through this list for an existing route, just waiting to be adopted.

Dear Arbirders,
The masthead on the Arbird website (official site of the Arkansas Audubon S=
ociety), www.arbirds.org<http://www.arbirds.org/> , has been updated thanks=
to the efforts of David Luneau. The bird image in the upper left now chang=
es each time you log on to the site ... well, it is a stochastic process so=
you may actually get the same picture. If you wish a little slide show, yo=
u can repeatedly click the reload button on your browser. The smaller thum=
bnails have also been changed and will be refreshed after an interval.
We think this will work with any browser. Let me know if you have a browser=
that will not rotate the images in the upper left corner of the masthead.=
Mac users .... any problems?
I plan to put a small slide show in the area now occupied by the Anna's Hum=
mingbird providing people sent me their photos.
At the Ft. Smith meeting the AAS Board approved a photo gallery of bird pic=
tures taken by AAS members.
So, please send me your good bird pictures as they can be used in numerous =
places on the the website.

developing one, so I'll be sure to let everyone know when we have a more

I visited Allsopp Park this morning and was able to get great looks at
the Mourning Warbler with Lynn Christie, Leslie Peacock, and Becky
Wheeler.=20
If you park near the restrooms and where the MS Kites are nest-building,
you'll see a gated trail/road. The bird has been hanging out in some
thick vegetation adjacent to the gate. The bird was singing
enthusiastically yesterday afternoon and for a few hours this morning.
We had trouble viewing the bird from the road, but if you walk beyond
the gate there is a small trail above and we had terrific views from
there.=20

Thursday mid-morning, a female Blackpoll Warbler in the back yard. I saw it
through the window, ran out on the deck, and watched it for three or four
minutes as it fed in my pine and the neighbor's water oak.
The other day when I was running my route just a few blocks away I looked up
and saw three Black Vultures flying over. If only I'd been standing in my front
yard I think I could have seen them. They've been showing up more and more
around LR; I never used to see them near the city.

Many of you know that Martha Milburn, long-time birder , member of AAS, DOBC
and other conservation organizations, had a stroke this past Saturday. She
was out counting birds for the IMBD with two friends when this happened.
She was taken to our local hospital. Since the weather was so bad - tornado
warnings, rain, etc., she couldn't be airlifted to Springfield. When the
weather settled she was taken by ambulance to Cox South in Springfield, MO.
According to her niece-in-law, Dicksie Milburn, "Aunt Martha will be
dismissed tomorrow (Friday) from Cox. She will be brought by ambulance to
Hilltop Nursing Home where she will stay for rehab. After she finishes with
the rehab, she'll stay at Harrison Retirement Center for a while."
Many of you have asked how to send Aunt Martha a card.
Starting tomorrow (Friday) her address will be:

I too have a strange Mourning Dove. Not as strange as the one mentioned in
earlier posts, but still unique. In all aspects, it is Mourning Dove,
except for an all white tail, not just the edges that you see as it flys.
It is hanging around with a group of about a dozen at my feeding station,
one of which seems to be it's mate. I noticed it first about a few weeks
ago.
In other news, I am being taken over by fledgling House Finches.
