I see your 7:40AM Rufous and raise you a 7:15AM Rufous! =A0
Ours remains a bit aloof, however. =A0We still have many pineapple sage blo=
ssoms, flowering quince, azaleas, and Navajo sage to divert attention from =
the feeders. =A0I don't think that sweet olive has nectar, but mine is divi=
nely fragrant today in spite of my attempt to overwhelm it with the aroma o=
f deck sealant. =A0Today marks day 15 for Rufie 2.

Subject: Lonoke and Little Rock CBCs
From: Dan Scheiman <birddan(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 1 Dec 2009 8:24pm
ARBirders,
This is an open invitation to any and all who would like to
participate in the Lonoke (Sunday Dec 20) and Little Rock (Sunday Dec
27) Christmas Bird Counts. All experience levels
welcome. Experienced birders always needed too. Tally rallies to follow.
Both counts have a great mix of habitats, plenty of waterfowl, a few
shorebirds and raptors. Both can tally over 100 species. Rarities
found in the recent past include Cackling Goose, Long-tailed Duck,
Merlin, Bewick's Wren, Nashville Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Rough-legged Hawk, Glaucous Gull, and Black-legged Kittiwake!
As always, Audubon Society of Central Arkansas sponsors both counts
so you don't need to pay $5 (remember this if you sign up and pay for
CBCs in advance through Audubon's online portal).
There are many regulars I have not heard from yet.
If you can't get into the field but live in the count circle please
be a FEEDERWATCHER (record tallies and time).
RSVP to me off-list please. Thanks.

Congress Gives Critical Funding for Hawaiian Species at Epicenter of Global
Extinction Crisis
Image removed by sender. AkikikiThis month, the President signed into law a
key bill that included critically needed funding to address the looming bird
extinction crisis in Hawaii. Congress sent the bill to the President with $3
million dedicated for Hawaiian birds. Hawaii still boasts an astounding 42
endemic bird species, but 31 of these now face the risk of extinction, and
ten have not been seen in years.

Big Wins for Birds on National Forests
Image removed by sender. Red-cockaded WoodpeckerA federal judge has struck
down harmful forest planning regulations made last year that eliminated a
key wildlife protection provision. The provision ensured that viable
populations of native vertebrates are maintained whenever plans are
developed for National Forests. This rule has been instrumental in
protecting habitat for Northern Spotted Owls, and Black-backed and
Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, but has been a frequent target of interests
seeking to eliminate environmental safeguards.

Barbed Wire Fences Take Significant Toll on Imperiled Greater Sage-Grouse,
New Study Finds
Image removed by sender. Greater Sage-GrouseResults of a new study by
biologists with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department have raised awareness
of yet another hazard to Greater Sage-Grouse populations. In addition to the
combined threats of sagebrush habitat loss due to development and
agriculture, oil and gas exploration, and wind power development, it appears
that collisions with barbed wire fences, used primarily to facilitate
grazing, can be a significant source of mortality.
