[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: celebrating the possible in ornithology From: Joe Neal <joeneal(AT)UARK.EDU> Date: 3 Dec 2009 5:41am The message below is from Doug James. He authorized me to send it out to folks on the list. Probably most or perhaps all of you know Doug has been teaching for 50+ years. This is a fascinating course and a great opportunity to learn from a person who has spent his entire life in bird study. If you have ANY interest, don't pass this up! From what Doug told me yesterday, this will probably be the last time he teaches this course. In my opinion, it is in some ways a victory lap and in others a celebration of the possible. -Joe This is Doug's message: Over the years in the past there have been several people, non-students, from the local community who have taken by university course in Ornithology. There is room in the course for more people this coming spring semester. If you want to register, contact me for details. One can register at any time between now and January 11, when classes begin. If you are 60 years or older tuition is free. The class lecture meets from 3:00-4:00 pm every Tuesday and Thursday, and the lab is on Friday 1:30-5:20.The first few weeks of lab is devoted to aspects of bird biology that is suitable to laboratory study. For the rest of the semester the lab consists of afternoon field trips learning to identify birds. The course can be registered for credit (you take the tests) or for audit (don't have to take the tests). The course is BIOL 4763 Section 1 for the lecture and BIOL 4763L Section 1 for the lab. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Rufous Hummingbird-Hights From: Donna Haynes <birdiehaynes(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 3 Dec 2009 7:02pm I stopped by Cindy Franklins yard this afternoon after work for the Rufous Hummingbird. He did not dissapoint. I did think all hopes were dashed when a Coopers Hawk arrived on the scene and made two failed attempts on Morning Doves. The bird activty and song soon returned to the volume it had been when I arrived. Just then I heard a short buzz above and behind me. I froze of course and refreined from turning my head. Soon I heard hummer chatter and the Rufous flew over me and too the feeder. He drank and rested for quite some time. I was able to snap 35 pics, although none were as good as Cindys. He was a beautiful little bird and I felt priviliged to share space with him. Thanks for allowing visitors Cindy. I have my hummer fix, but for how long? Donna Haynes West Pulaski Co.
