[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Great Article in Demzette From: JoAnne Rife <RifeJA(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 20 Mar 2010 10:03am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Jerry Butler's article about the wintertime hummingbirds in our state in today's Democrat Gazette is well-written, great pictures, just a very good summary of what to the real birders is exciting and a matter of curiosity for the casual ones.. (I somehow didn't get the effect from Kim's posting on ARbird as from my morning paper...but then I'm not very geeky..just very nerdy..so newspapers are my media!!! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: FOS: Waterthrush From: Jack and Pam <jackstewart_us(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 20 Mar 2010 5:16pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Today an early, at least for the Erbie area, Louisiana Waterthrush was singing near the Buffalo River just upstream from the Erbie crossing this morning. The bird had me guessing for awhile because it sounded more like a Northern Waterthrush which would have been really early. The sound of the river made hearing difficult so I ended up taking off shoes and socks, rolling up pants, and wading the river. Half way across I was compelled to look down and fortunately in the clear water could see my feet even though I could no longer feel them. Finally, I got directly under the bird and although the song was not typical Louisiana, and I couldn't get a clear look at the eye-line, I was able to check out one of my favorite secondary field marks which is a clear unspotted chin. I remember this field mark with the idea that the spots on the Northern are a scarf the bird needs to keep warm! Jack Stewart Newton County ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION----
