Happy Easter!
Today is the 4th of April. At 7:20am, in one of the Jasmine Vines, which by
the way are gorgeous and smelling like heaven, the first Ruby-throated
Hummingbird has been spotted here at the home in Little Rock at Pleasant
Place (which it is). It was the 4th of April last year, and the year before
also. He, it is a male, did not land on a branch or on the feeder so I do
not if he has a band.
What a great way to start this day, and this year, on the day of Celebrating
Life!
Thanks,
Larry Witherspoon
You are forgiven

Subject: Hooded Merganser

Saturday was such a beautiful afternoon, we decided to take the boat out on it's
maiden voyage of the season and try for a few
fish. No fish, so pizza for supper, but we enjoyed watching a pair of Canada
Geese paddling around and feeding in the brush.
A most unexpected surprise was a beautiful hooded merganser popping up not far
from our fishing lines. He paddled a few
seconds, dove under and resurfaced after the longest time 15-20 feet from where
he dove. This happened twice more and we lost
him. I guess we were watching the wrong ares for him to resurface. Watching
him made up for the lack of fishing action. It's
always a good day to find an unexpected bird.

Subject: Sighting: FOS RT Hummingbird and Bluebirds

I finally spotted my first hummer at my feeder! It was a lovely little male.
Happy day!
I was having a problem finding the Bluebird House that I wanted. I became quite
hurried when the bottom fell out of the old one during the storm the other
night. The nest was unharmed, so I bought the first Bluebird House I saw
yesterday. Adam mounted it and I placed the nest in it. I saw no activity
around the house yesterday afternoon. This morning I have observed the male
defending the area around the house. Hopefully they will accept their new home
and raise many broods in years to come!

Better than a chocolate bunny! Just sitting outside on the deck this
morning, before I had my first cup of coffee, hoping to sight some of the
warblers everyone's been talking about, when "our" first Ruby-throated
Hummingbird buzzed in, glorious gorget reflecting the low sunlight rays,
just three feet in front of me at our hummingbird feeder. He was a beautiful
specimen, apparently having been well fed by these strange ubiquitous
"flowers" on his journey north. He sipped a long while, then buzzed off.
Hope he stays.
Our Red-bellied Woodpecker is spending a lot of time on the ground these
days, pecking at the dirt and I hope, eating ants. Cardinals and Bluebirds
everywhere. Bob reports that the White-throated Sparrows are almost all
gone, except the ones that are not colored up yet. We miss the Goldfinches,
too. We've seen the Black and White Warbler, but not the others yet.
Waiting. Looking.
Now to prepare the three morels I found yesterday.another very special
Easter gift provided by Mother Nature (and an all day walk in the woods).I
learned this year that the Iranians celebrate their New Year on the vernal
equinox.makes more sense to me than in the middle of winter. This time is a
happy new year to birders and gardeners, anyway.
Here's to spring!
