I've just heard from Barbara MacKinnon de Montes, whose incredible
conservation work on the Yucatan peninsula are inspirational, that the Sixth
Annual Yucatan Birding Festival will be held 6th Yucatan Bird Festival, Nov.
13 – 16 (week before Thanksgiving).
Based in and around the wonderful city of Merida (great food, shopping, and
culture for the nonbirding partners), the festival has been a great way to
boost support for conservation along the northern coast of the Yucatan
peninsula - an incredibly important region for neotropical migrants and
resident birds.
Barbara says that if they don't get more international participation this
year, the government may not be willing to support the festival in the future.
Tim and I were down there last year, though not for the festival. It is an
incredibly wonderful area, with Mayan ruins everywhere. The birding was
great, the ruins were really ruined, and we had the best meal of our lives -
by a wide margin - at a restaurant 10 minutes out of Merida.
So let's all make the big sacrifice and go birding in the Yucatan this
November!

messages about birding outside the local area)

Sorry - I forgot to include logistical details and contact info.
This is what is currently available:
http://www.yucatantoday.com/events/eng-bird-festival.htm
As more info becomes available, I will post notices here.
I should also mention that Merida is quite inexpensive. We had a nice,
clean, comfortable room in a charming and romantic hotel right in the center
of the city, within easy walking distance of everything, and we paid $45 per
night. Except for that "meal of a lifetime" that I mentioned, food was also
quite inexpensive.
I hope Chatters will help Barbara make this a blow-out year!

Duh. The link was right at the bottom of the poster:

So those of you who are active in Audubon chapters and state offices:
Why not make this an Audubon challenge and send one (or more) teams from
every Audubon chapter or office?

Just for giggles, what if Howard Cosell were to cover birding as a sport? One
scenario here:
