Subject: videos of birdlife around Lago Atitlan in Guatemala
From: "Carol Anderson" <mayancarol(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 5:31am
Folks,
I've been shooting some videos of the life around Lago Atitlan - the latest
video, shot at dusk last night with a storm brewing captured the
Black-vented Oriole and Azure-Crowned Hummingbird. If you enjoy it, take a
look at some of my other videos, some shot in other villages close by. You
have to ignore the very first frame of last night's video - I'm still new at
this.

Subject: Re: Costa Rica lodges
From: Robert Straub <straub_robert(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 8:03am
Hello Mike,
Tha Ecolodge San Luis is a great place. I stayed and worked there several years
ago. It is just below the Monteverde area in a beautiful valley, away from the
traffic and hotels. They have private cabins and also dormitories. The meals are
family-style and wonderful. They offer local hikes in the valley, and also
trips up the Monteverde reserves, and horseback riding. The guides are young
volunteers, usually from the US who are also often participating in research
projects (not always birders). The lodge is a tropical research station
associated with the University of Georgia. The birding is good on the lodge
grounds and trails, especially for a first trip to Costa Rica, and Monteverde is
a short drive away. You could go there with or without your own transportation.
Without a car, they can arrange a local taxi to take you up to the Monteverde
area.
It is a very nice alternative for a few days or more in the Monteverde area.
You can search "Ecolodge San Luis". Here is one site:

Subject: Hilton Pond 04/01/08
From: Research at Hilton Pond <research(AT)hiltonpond.org>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 8:44am
A few years ago, we found some light-colored sticks in Hilton Pond
that formed a "T." We took this letter to stand for "Trouble," and
our newest photo essay reveals further evidence of what could be a
real problem for trees along the banks of Hilton Pond.
To understand what the heck we're talking about, please visit the 1-7
April 2008 installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond" at
http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek080401.html
As always we include a list of all birds banded, plus miscellaneous
nature notes.
Happy (Spring) Nature Watching!

Fujinon 12x32 Techno-Stabi JR Binocular
Nikon 12x32 StabilEyes VR Binocular
Thanks ahead of time for your comments.
I'll be happy to share the comments & my results with anyone who is interested.

Subject: Bird Chat: Bachman's Sparrow tips
From: "Karen Forcum" <tkforcum(AT)consolidated.net>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 6:29pm
I want to thank everyone for the great tips on Bachman's Sparrows.
Ted and I headed South through Mississippi on Wednesday evening and returned
this afternoon with yet another lifer, the Bachman's Sparrow, to add to our
exciting bird list. Our main objective was Big Branch Marsh NWR.
What a place this was to bird. Pines with a good colony of Red-Cockaded
Woodpeckers, and Brown Headed Nuthatches as well. The little Bachman's Sparrow
sang as soon as we parked the truck at the Boy Scout Trail. But of course it
was not that easy. One must be patient. We listened and walked and enjoyed
every bird we seen. We walked out on a long boardwalk that goes through a
bayou. Full of wonderful reptiles and birds and warblers just thick in the
trees. Finally coming back a Backman's Sparrow flew up from the grass in the
pines and sang for us and posed for us and what a thrill. We took tons of
pictures and we got our lifer.
Then to top it all off a King Rail with 10 little chicks went across the trail
in front of us. We were so awed we did not grab the camera up until the last
two chicks were still crossing. If you ever want to go birding in spring head
south for New Orleans.
Of course being in 80 degree temps and coming back to cold 40 degrees and
drizzle in IL was quite a shock.
Have a Birder Good Day
