Subject: Bird images (link)
From: Devorah Bennu <birdologist(AT)yahoo.com>

hello everyone,
today was the last of a series of images of ducks by
my avicultural friend, John del Rio. These images are
quite stunning because the ducks are captive-bred so
he can get relatively close to them. today's image was
another one of the "abstract" images that i like so
very much, and that you've got to see;
http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2008/04/abstract_harlequin_duck.php
you can see his other duck images by clicking on the
"image of the day" tag. i will be running some images
by other people for a week or so, and then will run
another series of John's bird images (i've got a bunch
in the queue, waiting ..).

Subject: Wild Chronicles Piece on Bicknell's Thrush and other
Hispaniolan birds
From: "Matthew Medler" <mattmedler(AT)borealbirds.org>
Date: 15 Apr 2008 5:03pm
Hi BirdChatters,
I thought this might be of interest to many of you. It should be a
great piece!
Matt Medler

The Vermont Center for Ecostudies' research on songbirds in the
mountains of the Dominican Republic will be featured soon on National
Geographic's Wild Chronicles television show.
Filmed this past February, the Wild Chronicles segment highlights the
Vermont Center for Ecostudies' long-term studies of Bicknell's Thrush
and other migrant and resident species on Hispaniola. The feature
includes vivid footage of several of Hispaniola's 31 endemic species,
some of which are among the most rare and threatened of Caribbean birds.
"The tropical environment of the Dominican Republic is a long way from
home for National Geographic grantee Chris Rimmer," according to
National Geographic, which has helped to fund VCE's work on Hispaniola.
"Like the birds he studies, Rimmer migrates to this biologically rich
island to conduct his research. The goal of Rimmer's pioneering research
on the island is to compile a comprehensive database of both migrant and
resident bird species that will lead to sound conservation practices."
The broadcast schedule for Wild Chronicles varies, depending on your
local public television station. For broadcast times in your area,
check the local listings at

Subject: Radar Imagery Sites
From: "R.D. Everhart" <everhart(AT)black-hole.com>
Date: 15 Apr 2008 7:03pm
Hi everyone,
I've had a few people ask me for the sites where I check the
nexrad images for indications of migration. The best site is:
http://weather.radar.gov
I do have another spot bookmarked with the really long URL below:
www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/displayRad.php?icao=KUSA&prod=n0r&b
kgr=black&endDate=20050421&endTime=-1&duration=0
What I like about this one is that it is a composite map that
let's you look at the entire country at one time. I don't know of any
radar sites for Mexico but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. One
person did mention that the gulf coast of Alabama has seen a couple
of fall out mornings so there is at least some movement in the
eastern gulf area. I don't know if there have been any big lift offs
from the Yucatan Peninsula headed to Texas.
A good site for a basic introduction to Radar Ornithology is the
Journey North website:
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/weather/radar/index.html
Again tonight it looks like northward movement in the central U.S.
but further east than last night. This may be due to a cold front
moving south through the Dakotas and Minnesota. I hope this helps
folks find good images for their area.
