Weather:
Fierce southerly winds for a second day in a row (they toppled the Parker
Road portable toilet); steadily dropping barometer until the front passed
and the very mild temperature fell precipitously. The Lake Erie ice was
blown off the shore by the southerly winds (but it will return tomorrow
with the predicted northerly winds).
Raptor Observations:
The season's first rough-legged hawks; the migration activity ended with
the rain that came near the end of the fourth hour.
Non-raptor Observations:
Jann Randell and Mike Ceci helped with the count.
Predictions:
Sunny, cooler, with temperatures just above freezing; brisk northerwesterly
winds.

Weather:
Dense fog in am precluded an on-time start. Warm temps and a still
multiple-foot (in the woods) snowpack produced unexpectedly persistent, and
dense, fog. Anxiously anticipating a big flight on perfect SSW winds, I
(Derek) got to the count site at 11:15 EDST, despite continued dense fog
and near zero visibility. Undue optimism and good conversation kept Casey
and I on the hill, despite the conditions. Occasional quick breaks in the
fog would reveal one of the fields in the distance teased us repeatedly.
Fog finally began to lift at about 1:30 EDST and a local Turkey Vulture
appeared at 1:45. First migrant of day was a Coop at about 2:15 EST. Fog
had lifted completely, and there were even a few breaks of sun, but it
seemed too late to get a flight going. Meanwhile, light rain beginning
around 4:20 EDST brought the count, and our optimism, to a close for the
day.
Raptor Observations:
The highlight of the day was watching an adult Bald Eagle (probably male)
dogfighting with an immature Bald (prob female)out towards the Royal River
area.
Non-raptor Observations:
Other birds deemed to be migrating:
13 American Robins
62 Common Grackles
1 Red-winged Blackbird
25 Canada Geese
2 American Black Ducks
Plus:
An afternoon visit from 16 Bohemian Waxwings, making their daily rounds to
feed on Common Juniper.
Predictions:
Strong W or NW winds with cooler temperatures.
