Raptor Observations:
We had expected a better flight day but it didn't materialize. A Merlin
perched in a tree for several minutes.
Non-raptor Observations:
The easterly winds soon moved us to the alternate count site at the William
Willaims Ball Park off Rogers Rd., closer to the lake shore.

Directions to site:
Lakeside Memorial Park in Hamburg, NY. is located about 12 miles southwest
of Buffalo, NY at the Hamburg Exit 57 of the NY State Thruway. Bear right
after the toll booth onto Camp Road (Route 75). Proceed through the traffic
light at Southwestern Blvd.(Route 20). The entrance to Lakeside Memorial
Park is on the left, less than 1/4 mile from the light. The watch is
normally conducted half way between the entrance and the woods.

Light, westerly winds off the cold lake were right in our faces, making the
moderate (6 - 10 C) temperatures still feel cold. A light haze restricted
visibility all day
Raptor Observations:
The two o'clock osprey was carrying his dinner.
Non-raptor Observations:
Do not drive a car that's not good in mud to a spring hawk watch!

Predictions:
Sunny and warmer. Easterly winds might slow down and spread out the
flight.

together(too distant to age, even with scope); 2 Red-tailed Hawks flying
together(2 adults, seen twice); Cooper's Hawk; Northern Goshawk; and a
Sharp-shinned Hawk. And of course, several Turkey Vultures.

Sunny skies prevailed throughout the day today. Winds were light southeast
early becoming moderate northwest in late morning.
Raptor Observations:
What started as a pretty good movement quickly fizzled once the wind
switched to the northwest. In fact the afternoon was as slow as it has been
in a week or so.
Non-raptor Observations:
New arrivals included Belted Kingfisher and Eastern Phoebe. A first summer
Glaucous Gull was also of note.

Weather:
Rain had stopped at 9:45 AM, Winds were E-ESE(1) until 12:15PM, with
totally overcast skies; By 2 PM, winds had shifted to W-NW(3), and clouds
were now high in the sky; By 4 PM the winds had shifted back to the east
and were again light (1)
Raptor Observations:
No observations were made from 12:15-2 PM (I was not at the site); very
little movement; Merlin flew directly over me (no higher than 25ft.).
5+ Northern Harriers moving back and forth and 2+Redtails
Non-raptor Observations:
2 Greater Yellowlegs, pair of Common Mergansers, pair of Hooded Mergansers,
1 Great Egret (with beautiful plumes), and 4 Snipe flushed by harrier at
North pool
Predictions:
East wind -- does not look promising

Site is Parking Lot #1 of the Parker River National Wildlifee Refuge on
Plum Island, Newburyport, MA
Take Plum Island Turnpike, cross bridge and take first right onto road
leading to refuge. Parking Lot 1 is on left, shortly after passing refuge
entrance

Weather:
Foggy in the early morning. Flight started when the fog burned off. Partly
overcast all day.
Raptor Observations:
Raptors were spread all over the sky, at times both high and low.
The local Cooper's Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks and a local American Kestrel
made appearences.
One of the Rough-legged Hawks at 11 AM EST was a dark phase bird.
Non-raptor Observations:
Wood Duck, Great Blue Heron, Red Polls, Blue Bird, and the Tree Swallows .
Two groups of Double-crested Cormorants were observed. The first group of
9 at about 10 AM EST headed NE. The second group of 20 at about 1PM EST
also headed NE.

Site Description:
This spring only "all volunteer" watch is conducted at Lakeside Memorial
Park in Hamburg, NY. It is located on flat lake plain located along the
shoreline of the east end of Lake Erie, about 12 miles south of Buffalo,
NY.

Site Description:
Fort Smallwood Park is located on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay at
the mouth of the Patapsco River, 11 miles south of Baltimore, MD. Best
winds are from the southwest. The Park is closed to visitors on
Wednesdays.
