Subject: FREE HMANA journals ! Old issues available!
From: "Laurie Goodrich" <goodrich(AT)hawkmtn.org>
Date: 7 Apr 2008 10:35am
Are you missing any HMANA journals from 2002 and back?????
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------
if so, we have extras that we would like to give away dating back to
1976. So, complete your set or donate a run to
your local library.
We have five complete sets for 1999-2002 that are only missing spring
2002. and incomplete runs for other years.
old 2003 and 2004 and 2005 are possibly available as well.
Journals will be given away free, although some shipping cost may have
to be incurred if cannot pick them up--
although negotiable...
Lots of historical data is printed in the older journal (pre-hawkcount
days!) so add these valuable issues to your archives!

Weather:
A bright, dry day with mainly easterly winds and warming temperatures. The
sky was mainly clear with a light haze.
Raptor Observations:
East winds kept the flight well out towards the lake. Migrant raptors were
very difficult to see due to the distance and the light, hazy blue sky.
Typically, Turkey Vultures made up the vast majority of the day's
observations.
Non-raptor Observations:
The first hour was at the cemetery site with the remainder of the day at
the ballpark parking lot.
The most interesting non-raptor observation (made by Jim Pawlicki) was of
an adult Iceland Gull high in the sky. Dave Gordon noted a N. Mockingbird
at the entrance to the ballpark site.

Mostly cloudy and somewhat unsettled conditions early in the day gave way
to partly sunny conditions in late morning and mostly sunny skies in the
afternoon. Despite the sun however, conditions were generally unsettled
with late day showers moving into the area and a thunderstorm was heard off
to the east. Winds were light and variable early becoming moderate
southeast by mid morning.
Raptor Observations:
Rough-legs dominated the early part of the count while Red-tails were most
active during the sunnier portions of the day in the late morning and
afternoon. Of note among the Red-tails were two rufous morph individuals.
Also a nice treat was a middle of the day Short-eared Owl that was being
vigorously mobbed by a Raven.

Overcast; moderate NE winds; high 9C
Raptor Observations:
Only raptors seen (besides local breeding Osprey pairs) were 1
Sharp-shinned and 1 Cooper's Hawk, both considered to be locally staging
birds.
Non-raptor Observations:
The White-eyed Vireo - first seen on March 24 - was again seen from the
hawk watch platform today. Also present was an adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull, and a Gray Catbird (fos).
Predictions:
Mostly cloudy in the morning...then becoming partly sunny. Highs in the
lower 50s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
Unfavorable conditions persist, although light E winds and a mix of sun
and clouds for Wednesday may bring some raptors over Sandy Hook. These
conditions are merely less unfavorable than what we've had so far...
