Surface winds from the lake to the top of the escarpment were northerly: thermals over the land pulled cold air from the lake, creating northerly surface winds up to several miles south of the lake; winds elsewhere were southerly. Raptor Observations: The northerly surface winds created a nice surf on the hillside for good numbers of ospreys, northern harriers, accipiters and redtails. The 11:00 o'clock golden eagle was a juvenile or a Basic I. The peregrine came through low at Site 2. Two non-migrant bald eagles: one adult, one immature. Non-raptor Observations: We moved from Route 5 to Parker Road to Belson Road as the northerly winds continued to push the birds inland. One sandhill crane. Tom W., Mike C., Jann R. helped with the count. Predictions: Showers and thunderstorms possible, but strong southerly winds might bring some birds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Gilbert Randell (janngil(AT)cecomet.net) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA.
