Observers: Gil Randell
Weather:
Cold northwesterly winds in our faces all day; a virtually cloudless sky.
Hoped for southerly winds early which never materialized.
Raptor Observations:
The westerly winds spread the birds somewhat and allowed them to go high.
Site 2, inland but still on the lake plain, turned out to be our best spot.
A few small kettles of broadwings; two non-migrating bald eagles: one
adult, one immature.
Non-raptor Observations:
One sandhill crane, four loons. The cloudless sky, the cold wind in our
faces and the height of the birds made for hard work (but not without some
rewards).
Dave and Anita Cooney, Mike Ceci, Jill and Berk Adams and Jann Randell
helped with the count.
Predictions:
Sunny. Warm. Brisk south winds might bring some more broadwings as well as
good numbers of other migrants.

Weather:
Virtually cloudless. Temp. 4C at beginning of period, 7C at end. Wind SW at
5 mi/hr at beginning, but soon the lake breeze took over, producing a
chilly W to WNW wind, maximum speed 14 mi/hr at noon. Humidity declined
from 70% to 40%. Barometer between 30.21 and 30.27.
Raptor Observations:
Birds mostly easily visible. They came from many directions, and the flight
directions were equally variable, with many passing directly over the
hawkwatch. Very little kettling.
Non-raptor Observations:
The first barn swallows that I have seen at the hawkwatch this year.
Predictions:
Continued bright weather, probably even better for raptor migration than
today.

Observers:
Weather:
It was a basically sunny day today with high cirrus cloud cover of varying
quantities. Winds were moderate south-southeast in the morning becoming
strong and gusty southeast in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
There was a steady movement of birds throughout the day with a high flight
line in the morning that was knocked down considerably once the winds
picked up. Most species were recorded in their best numbers so far this
spring with the Rough-leg and Sharpie movement dominating the flight
overall. Perhaps surprising given the lateness of this particular spring
was the appearance of the first Broad-wing of the season.
Non-raptor Observations:
Large numbers of Sandhill Cranes were on the move today with about a
thousand recorded but with many more I'm sure slipping by unnoticed while
the hawks were active.
