Despite the desirable weather conditions, there were few hawks moving.
Since the sky was clear and there was little wind at times, the birds
passed overhead very high soon after the flight began. Today was the first
movement of Broad-winged Hawks for the season and nearly all were very
high. There was little kettling of any species.

Subject: Seasonal Raptor Migration Counter, Bander, and Interpreter
Positions
From: "Jeff P. Smith" <jsmith(AT)hawkwatch.org>
Date: 16 Apr 2008 2:48pm
SEASONAL RAPTOR MIGRATION COUNTERS, BANDERS, AND SITE INTERPRETERS (~40
positions) needed to staff fall migration projects in Texas, Arizona, Utah,
Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, with trapping
and banding occurring only at the latter five sites. Projects will run
between mid-August and mid-November 2008, with specific dates varying by
site. Applicants will be considered for two types of positions. Subject to
site-specific funding availability and appropriate qualifications,
experienced individuals may be recruited for Lead Observer and Lead Bander
positions as independent contractors compensated with monthly wages ranging
from $1,800-2,400. To be considered for such positions, applicants must
have at least one and preferably two full seasons of prior experience either
counting or trapping/banding migratory raptors. Otherwise, applicants will
be recruited as volunteers that receive a per diem of $35
($1050-1,085/month). All selected applicants also will receive a $150
site-access travel stipend, and reimbursement for other work related travel
and expenses. All applicants must have good eyesight, be in good physical
condition, be able to endure long hours in the field and variable weather,
have demonstrated birding and raptor-in-flight I.D. skills, and must be able
to work well in a team environment. Observers will work in teams of 2 or 3
to conduct daily, standardized counts of the migrations. All trapper/bander
applicants must have experience with bird capture, handling, and banding
techniques, preferably involving raptors. All Site Interpreters will be
recruited as volunteers and will serve as general project assistants with a
primary responsibility for facilitating visitor interactions and providing
basic environmental interpretation for guests. Weather permitting, all
crewmembers will work six days per week, with additional project support
provided by qualified, local volunteers. Most projects are in
high-elevation remote areas, experience highly variable weather, and require
camping on site, with alternative days-off and weather accommodations
generally provided in nearby local communities. At remote project sites,
all crewmembers must supply their own camping gear; basic housing will be
provided in Texas. Send cover letter, detailed resume, 3 current references
with phone numbers or e-mail addresses, and dates of availability preferably
by email to jsmith(AT)hawkwatch.org or by regular mail to Jeff Smith, HawkWatch
International, 2240 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84106. Visit
www.hawkwatch.org for project descriptions and past technical reports.
Positions are open until filled, but for priority consideration applications
should be received by 31 May 2008.

Beautiful sunny day. Wind varying from 13 to 27 kph and in direction from
south to south west to west north west to west. When it shifted to west
north west it was cooled down considerably by the ice on Lake Erie.
Raptor Observations:
An early flight of Turkey Vultures, then a break when the wind shifted and
then the Broad-winged Hawks started to move around 11:45 EST. After an hour
we moved to the Liesureland site as the west winds had shifted the raptors
in that direction. From there birds were sighted at all points of the
compass.
Non-raptor Observations:
Predictions:
Sunny, with a high near 60. Southwest wind between 9 and 14 mph. Looks
good!

Weather:
Southwesterly winds most of the day shifting to northwest late in the day.
Sunny skies, relatively warmer, a beautiful spring day.
Raptor Observations:
A nice preliminary broadwing flight. The wind shift sent the migrant
raptors to the hillside late in the day. Nice redtail and sharpie flights.
Six migrating bald eagles and two non-migrating bald eagles. By mid-day
the birds were very high and spread out against a sky pretty much cloudless
but with some helpful contrails. Many sets of good eyes made the work
easier and more productive.
Non-raptor Observations:
Several loons and a mockingbird.
Jann Randell, Jill and Berk Adams, Mike Ceci, and Tom Waselewski helped
with the count.
Predictions:
Brisk southwesterly winds again. Warm. There could be a good flight.

Weather:
Today was a pleasant and mild spring day if a bit windy. Sunny skies
prevailed throughout with fairly strong and gusty southeast winds.
Raptor Observations:
With the winds, the flight was largely low and many birds were seen flying
directly over or near the platform. The breakdown was similar to yesterday
but the flight overall was more heavily dominated by Sharpies with Harriers
and Kestrels having even better totals than the day previous.
Non-raptor Observations:
Spring arrivals included Tree and Barn Swallows and Greater Yellowlegs.
Sandhill Cranes were again migrating in similar numbers as yesterday.

Weather:
Clear skies; winds light and variable, then became moderate SSE; high 19C
Raptor Observations:
3 north-bound Black Vultures were seen, and for 20 minutes or so it looked
as if they had gone through... until they finally came back. Didn't like
Staten island so much I suppose.
Non-raptor Observations:
First Ruby-throated hummer of the season! Also 1 Rusty Blackbird.
Only birds flying in decent numbers were DC Cormorants: 249 in total.
Predictions:
Sunny. Highs in the mid 60s. North winds 5 to 10 mph... becoming east 10 to
15 mph in the afternoon.
Practically the same weather as today... a change in the weather is needed
to bring back raptor migration over the Hook.
