Site Description:
This spring only "all volunteer" watch is conducted at Lakeside Memorial
Park in Hamburg, NY. It is located on flat lake plain located along the
shoreline of the east end of Lake Erie, about 12 miles south of Buffalo,
NY.
Many North American hawk watch sites report their daily raptor counts at
www.hawkcount.org

Directions to site:
Lakeside Memorial Park in Hamburg, NY. is located about 12 miles southwest
of Buffalo, NY at the Hamburg Exit 57 of the NY State Thruway. Bear right
after the toll booth onto Camp Road (Route 75). Proceed through the traffic
light at Southwestern Blvd.(Route 20). The entrance to Lakeside Memorial
Park is on the left, less than 1/4 mile from the light. The watch is
normally conducted half way between the entrance and the woods. An
alternate site for easterly wind flights is at the William Williams Ball
Park, located on Rogers Rd. Take Route 20 south from Camp Rd. one traffic
light and turn right till just before the railroad crossing.

Light to moderate South winds all day; getting stronger in the PM. Comfy

Raptor Observations:
Nice Broad-winged Hawk day. 2 Ospreys riding updraft off of Bradbury
Mountain for 2 plus hours! Obviously a courtship flight/display, many
vocals were involved as well. Really awesome to witness!
Non-raptor Observations:
1 Indigo Bunting spotted by Susan Fogleman; nice spot Susan!

Visitors:
Today's visitors included Nadine Litwin's Bird Studies class of about 20
from Niagara College, Brian Mills from Guelph, Paul Summerskill, Brandon
Holden and Lauren, plus a few others for brief periods.
Weather:
Mostly sunny with some high thin cloud. Winds light to moderate from the
east northeast off the lake keeping temperatures to the mid-teens on the
tower. A bank of cumulus clouds was visible to the south during the
afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Disappointingly small flight with not too much variety. Many birds were
missing feathers in the wings sparking rumours of an earlier rumble. :-)
Non-raptor Observations:
A flock of 8 Double-crested Cormorant flew north at 4:10 EDT. Several
Common Loon flew west. Two Brown Thrasher below a feeder, 2 Eastern
Phoebe, Field Sparrow and White-throated Sparrow but generally few
migrants.

Site Description:
Beamer Conservation Area is located on top of the Niagara Escarpment above
the town of Grimsby, Ontario. The site is 1km south of the south shore of
Lake Ontario, 20km east of Hamilton, 40km west of Niagara Falls.
Directions to site:
To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 72, follow Christie St./Mountain
St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road West, and go
1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to the
conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If
parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your
car.

A bit of cloud early gave way to a mostly sunny day. Winds were light and
variable early in the day becoming light to moderate from the east by late
morning.
Raptor Observations:
Several species had their best movements of the season today, most
impressive being the massive Sharp-shin flight. Sharpies were relentless
throughout the day being active well before the count began even and were
still moving I imagine well after the count ended. Rough-legs, Kestrels and
Merlins all had their best showings of the spring as well.
