Southerly winds shifting to north early, warm and sunny.
Raptor Observations:
When the wind shifted north the birds went to the ridgetop and we happily
vacated the dusty, noisy Route 5 site for a trip to the hillside
overlooking the lake.
Non-raptor Observations:
Noisy yellow-bellied sapsucker, ruby-crowned kinglet, blue-grey
gnatcatcher, brown thrasher.
Eileen and Bill Jowett, Mike Ceci, Tom Simmons and Jann Randell helped
with the count.
Predictions:
Brisk southerly winds shifting to northerly in the afternoon when falling
temperatures and showers are a possibility. There might be a good flight
before or between the showers.

Winds once again starting from the south in the morning until the lake
breeze developed shifting winds to the north at 5-10 mph. Clear skies with
temperatures ranging from 15-20 C.
Raptor Observations:
Observations from 12pm until 3:30pm from south lookout.
Non-raptor Observations:
Predictions:
Wednesday should offer some good observing with pre-frontal southerly
winds. The hope is for strong enough winds to deter the lake breeze from
forming and keep the raptors low and visible. Mid-morning may be the best
time due to wind conditions and the threat of afternoon rain.

Visitors:
19 visitors for the hawkwatch or spent time with us at the hawkwatch, but
100+ total visitors to the summit today. Many families out enjoying the
weather during school vacation week. A number of low passes by migrant
raptors - including a 4th-cycle Bald Eagle - were enjoyed by the masses.
Weather:
Light southwest in am, becoming light and variable mid-day before afternoon
seabreeze (south) kicked in. Dense fog in early am cleared out just in
time for the count to begin, but some fog and haze persisted through late
am. Light haze continued throughout day. High cirrus clouds, of varying
coverage, throughout the day providing a nice backdrop for spotting birds.
Raptor Observations:
Nice, close pass by the local adult Northern Goshawk. At least two
different displaying Broad-winged Hawks now on territory.
Sharpie at 2:45 EST (3:45 EDST) was the 2,000th raptor of the season.
Migrants were becoming very high by late am, but altitude of most dropped
when the seabreeze kicked in.
Non-raptor Observations:
40 total species seen or heard from the summit today.
Other species deemed migrating:
73 Common Grackles
27 Tree Swallows
22 Double-crested Cormorants
13 Passerine sp.
12 Yellow-rumped Warblers
6 American Goldfinch
5 Great Blue Herons
4 Red-winged Blackbirds
4 Brown-headed Cowbird
3 "Yellow" Palm Warblers
3 Purple Finches
2 Barn Swallows
1 Common Loon
1 Belted Kingfisher
Predictions:
More southwest winds predicted, with an approaching cold front - a PERFECT
scenario! Should be fun!

Blue sky above but dense haze made spotting birds almost impossible. By mid
morning (1130) scattered patches of clouds from the NE started to move in
and offered some relief, making it easier to spot distant birds.
Non-raptor Observations:
When I arrived, I checked the area around the ledge and spotted a large (4
to 5 feet) black snake in a patch of grass in front of the hollow tree
where you store the snow shovel and rake. It rattled its tail to warn me to
keep my distance. No small birds or chipmunks were in the area either.
Local Red-tailed Hawks (5) soaring over Marcella Ridge all morning.
Surprise bird of the day was a Pileated Woodpecker.

Weather:
A mix of sun and cloud was seen throughout the day today with light
southeast winds becoming moderate but gusty in the afternoon. Some early
day mist and fog limited visibility somewhat. Heavier cloud cover moved
into the area late in the day ahead of the rain forecast for the overnight.
Raptor Observations:
A similar flight was seen today as the day previous, but with more
diversity early in the day and tapering off more quickly in the afternoon.
One very noticeable difference in the day was a marked increase in the
number of Red-tails recorded with this species having its biggest flight of
the season thus far. Also, the first Swainson's Hawk of the spring was
noted, a rufous morph adult.
Non-raptor Observations:
