Predictions: Mostly sunny, warm gentle east winds. The east winds will spread out any migrants, which will make for a challenging day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Gilbert Randell (janngil(AT)cecomet.net) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA. Weather: Nice warm temps all day long. No wind early; light to moderate later; mostly a South wind when it did blow. Raptor Observations: No large kettles, but an awesome day for Broad-winged Hawks. However, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Falcons were at the very least, co-stars of the day. 77 Sharpies; and many of the looks were point-blank. Incredible! 51 Falcons on the day. Awesome! 45 American Kestrels(again, many short-range looks); 5 Merlins - including an excellent look at a male; and 1 very large female. But perhaps the Bird of the day(on a stupendous Hawkwatching day), was a Peregrine Falcon that came in from the West, and proceeded to fly right over Bradbury Mountain(and our heads)- giving us a thrill that we will not soon forget! You would think that this spectacular Falcon was the fastest flying Bird on Planet Earth or something... Oh, wait; it is! Just our 2nd Peregrine of the 2008 Count, and such an awesome Hawkwatching treat. Great spot Brendan!! Also, 3 immie Bald-eagles; including an extended look at a Basic I Eagle; perhaps the largest Eagle that i have observed from Bradbury Mountain. It was truly a joy to be on the Mountain today... Non-raptor Observations: Absolutely excellent Hawkwatchers on the Mountain today! Specifically, i want to thank Brendan, Lionel, Bob D., Alex, and Becky. Without their efforts, our numbers today(and thus our thrills), would be greatly reduced, to say the least. With all of my heart, i thank you all... Extensive passerine movement early in the day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jeannette Lovitch (wildbirdcenter(AT)yarmouthbirds.com) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA. Temp. rose from 17C to 22C during the period; humidity declined from 62.6 to 44.7; barometer dropped slightly from 30.21 to 30.14. Raptor Observations: One would expect that such ideal weather would bring a good number of migrant raptors, especially since the broad-wings should be coming through now. It was a great disappointment, then, to have only a few raptors today! (Unless, of course, they were up in the stratosphere, beyond the reach of my binoculars.) Braddock Bay had a very good day, and Beamer had a reasonable showing also. Apparently the flight path did not include Hamburg on this day. Non-raptor Observations: Not much; the usual flocks of blackbirds, etc. Predictions: Hopefully better! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Bruce Chilton (BChi314159(AT)aol.com) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA.
