Intermittent rain showers thoughout the day. Raptor Observations: A fun day with very good looks at good birds - a twelve species day. Most birds were identifiable without binoculars. The merlin shot through below eye level. Good numbers of ospreys, sharpies, and harriers and a super look at a peregrine directly overhead within 200 metres. A promising increase in the number of broadwings with most still adults: more broadwings still to come? Intermittent showers slowed the flight only briefly. Non-raptor Observations: Several snipe and a continuation of the bluejay stream. Eileen and Bill Jowett, Tom Wasilewski and Jann Randell helped with the count. Predictions: Weather similar to today: showers likely and fairly warm southerly winds. Once again, more birds between the showers? ======================================================================== Report submitted by Gilbert Randell (janngil(AT)cecomet.net) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA. An extra thanks to Bob and Tom for hanging around in the quite-chilly temps of the afternoon. We had an awesome visit from Mr. Richardson's 4th grade class. These enthusiastic Hawkwatchers are from the Merriconeag Waldorf School. Not only are these way-cool young folks excellent Hawkwatchers; they are also very talented artists! They presented me with a beautiful card, adorned with drawings of fantastic real-life Raptors! Many are drawings of some of my favorite Raptors, and also of Raptor families. Other drawings are of Birds, that I one day hope to see. Simply awesome! Thanks with all my heart; and all of you hurry back to see us, please... Weather: Comfy temps early; a little chilly later in the day due to the winds off the Ocean. Good clouds 2nd half of day, but Birds were probably shut down South of us by then. Raptor Observations: A local Cooper's Hawk in a dramatic full stoop - incredible! A resident Red-tailed Hawk parachuting right in front of Bradbury Mountain - awesome! This Bird came up empty-taloned, only to be harrassed by a pair of American Crows! Such is life at the top of the food chain... Non-raptor Observations: Pine and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Blue-headed Vireos, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Chipping Sparrows, all very active around Site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jeannette Lovitch (wildbirdcenter(AT)yarmouthbirds.com) BIRDHAWK is sponsored by HMANA. First of Season: 6 Baltimore Orioles, 2 White-crowned Sparrows, and 4 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Predictions: Unstable air mass in the area, and the speed with which it clears on Saturday will determine the warmth and flight conditions. Therefore it is hard to say what will be airborne tomorrow. Another good day for non-raptors is likely. Winds were light easterly becoming moderate southeast in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: There was a very good early movement of birds, perhaps surprising given the conditions. Sharp-shins dominated the flight overall but highlighted by one of the few adult Northern Goshawks noted this season. After some midday showers, there was very little addition movement for the balance of the day even though skies were dry overhead.
