Weather:
Brisk, very warm southerly winds kicked up dust and grit into our faces
from Route 5 and the freshly limed corn fields. The wind gusts reached
25-30 mph. Skies ranged from mostly overcast to clear.
Raptor Observations:
Five sightings of non-migratory bald eagles. Such excellent conditions for
migration and so few broadwings suggest that the broadwing season is pretty
much over. Another strong flight of sharpies and red-tails.
Non-raptor Observations:
Baltimore orioles, scarlet tanagers, thousands of bluejays and a
surprisingly strong flight of turkey vultures.
Despite the grit in the eyes, the hawk watch was still a good place to be
today.
Mike Ceci, Bill and Eileen Jowett and Jann Randell helped with the count.
Predictions:
Rain and cool northerly winds: not promising for migrants.

Visitors:
11 in total. Nice spotting in tough conditions Bob Dawson and Tom Downing!
Weather:
Light to moderate winds all day; direction variable. Warm temps, with
little or no cloud cover all day.
Raptor Observations:
Merlins won a pitcher's duel over American Kestrels, 3 to 2.
Numerous young Broad-winged Hawks ou,t of the 38 that i counted.
Non-raptor Observations:
Black-and-white and Black-throated Green Warblers singing onsite, during
1st half of day.
I want to take a minute to thank the Quirion and Dawson Families for their
stupendous hospitality the past 2 nights. Their kindness included delicious
home-cooked meals prepared by Pauline Quirion, and Evie Dawson,
respectively. Pauline made a 6 course chicken-dinner. WOW! If you decide to
market that excellent beef-barley soup Pauline, please let me know!! Evie
made 2 homemade pizzas(with 2 different types of thin-crusts), that were
both outstanding in the tastiest of ways. YUMMY! Thank you Ladies!
As for the guys; on my day off, Lionel Quirion and Jay Adams showed me
around the Arboretum in Augusta, as well as the Scarborough Marsh Area. At
the Arboretum(not sure i am spelling that right!)we had at least 7 Warbler
species, Baltimore Oriole, Sora, Virginia Rail, Eastern Bluebird, Merlin,
and Broad-winged Hawk. The highlight for me however, was seeing(and
hearing!)a Wilson's Snipe male as he flew around for several minutes in a
territorial display. Way cool!!
At Scarborough Marsh, we had Glossy Ibis, Little-blue Heron, Northern
Harrier, Long-tailed Duck, White-winged Scoter, American Oystercatcher,
American Kestrel(an awesome look at a gorgeous female through Jay's scope -
nice spot Lionel!), and numerous Willets displaying territorial and mating
behaviors. But the highlight for me was hearing Common Eider males as they
tried to impress a pretty female; this call was really a wild sounding
gutteral noise, that was accompanied by some serious head-bobbing.
Absolutely amazing stuff!!
Later in the day, Bob Dawson and i explored some woods close by his home
in Cape Elizabeth(i hope i got the town name right Bob - i am quite tired
as i type this!). These are beautiful woods, and in them we watched 2
Black-throated Green Warbler males for several minutes as they sang and
raced from tree to tree in some type of nesting-territory contest. It was
so cool! Also, we had several looks at a couple of stunning Yellow-rumped
Warbler males. Seeing these Birds in spring plumage is a real treat for
this Texas Birder! Another major highlight was a Northern Parula at the end
of our walk - nice spot Bob!
Bob and i also made several stops along the coast, where we witnessed
Common Eiders mating, and saw some Long-tailed Ducks in awesome spring
plumage. What a day!!!
