Subject: New Silhouette Hawk ID Guide Available Free
From: Paul Roberts <phawk254(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 11 Sep 2008 11:34pm
A new silhouette "Guide for Hawks Seen in the Northeast" is now available
free through HMANA. The guide has been published by the NorthEast Hawk Watch
(NEHW), a regional chapter of HMANA, and includes all new art and text by
Paul Carrier, the artist who created the ubiquitous hawk silhouette guide of
similar name over thirty years ago. The new two-page guide shows silhouettes
and key field marks for adults of all the migratory hawks regularly seen in
the northeastern United States and eastern Canada as well as Gyrfalcon and
Swainson's Hawk. You can download and print the guide free for personal
noncommercial use at www.hmana.org. You can also order inexpensive printed
editions of the guide - a standard edition printed on heavy, glossy card
stock, or a special laminated edition designed for heavy use in the field.
Individual and bulk ordering information is available on the HMANA web site.

Total observation time: 10 hours
Official Counter: Julie Tilden
Observers: Don Stokes, Francie Von Mertens, Gwen Jones, Lillian Stokes,
Meade Cadot
Visitors:
70 visitors including Jay Garrett-Larsen's 3rd grade class from the Well
School. All of you have eagle eyes! Well done spotting hawks to everyone
including Alexis Bonvie, Madeline Garland and Oliver Ward.
Thank you to everyone who helped strain their necks and eyes today. There
were definately some high ones. John Frank, Ann Preston, Gene Brochu, Al
Grimstad
Weather:
Who knew? The wind stayed just light and variable enough (SW-W) for some
really good movement, partly cloudy with lots of thermal-making sun.
Raptor Observations:
An amazing migration day! Kettles throughout the day formed primarily on
the eastern side of Pack and overhead-then moving more north in front of us
later in day. Binoculars needed for most-unless you were a third grader!
Highlights included close-up eagles, huge osprey #s and kettles that
started with 20, 40, 92 workng up to 200+! A few red-tails seemed to be on
the move.
After a sleepy hour or two in the afternoon, Al and I were rewarded ~5pm
with another 230 broadwing group up right over N. Pack. What a day!
Non-raptor Observations:
Lge # of yellow-rumped warblers.
Other sp: hermit thrush, common raven, blue jay, black-capped chickadee,
red-breasted nuthatch, dark-eyed junco, chimney swift, cedar waxwing, black
and white warbler (singing), red-eyed vireo, nashville warbler
Ruby-throated hummingbird: 5
Monarchs: 16
Junco kill site on the Marion Davis Trail.
Quote of the day: "This is SO the best hawkwatch in the world."-3rd
grader,Well School
Predictions:
Friday were getting more weather from the S/SW. It should be pretty windy
up there~10-20mph, increased humidity. Probably not so great for BW's.
Watch for a shift in weather early in the week..mon or tues.
