A good turnout for the second day of the Festival 2008. Several raptors
were captured in nets and were use for banding demos and adoptions. The
30-40 attendees were treated to go looks and good picture views of these
birds in the hand. Merlin, Sharpie, and Red-tail were shown. Later,
passerines species were also demonstrated on the Tower. A Good mix of
warblers cam through and seveal hummingbirds were banded too.
Weather:
wind 1-5 mph, SSW>S>SSW>E>SE, Temp 23.3C>29.7, R. Humidity 85.4%>68.7%,
Pres 29.74>29.57 in Hg, Cloud cover % 70>85>75>70>40>100, Visibility 1115
km, No precip until last few minutes of last hour,
Raptor Observations:
Sporadic flight. SS, CH, AK, NH, OS, RT, PG.
Non-raptor Observations:
Several Monarch Butterflies moved through the area.
Predictions:
I the stationary from becomes a cold front and moves to the east than the
winds behind it should be of north component. These winds are the best for
broad-wing movement. The weather to the east 50-100 km. and north Holiday
Beach area must also consist of the North component winds with no rain or
overcast to hope that large numbers of broad-wings will pass Monday and
Tuesday and should continue to pump birds over the area while the winds
remain northerly. That said, I'd just cross your fingers!
