Observation start time: 07:45:00
Observation end time: 17:00:00
Total observation time: 9.25 hours
Official Counter: Vic Laubach
Observers: Brenda Tekin, Dave Hunter
Visitors:
Lots of visitors today including Tom Lord, Dudley Rochester, Louse
Gebhardt, Marshal Faintich, Margaret OBrian, Alan Richardson.
Weather:
Very brisk winds from the NW all day ranging from 29-61km/hr due to a cold
front coming through. Temps started out at 27C and ended at 23C. Low
humidity (45-53%). Very clear visibility. Frequent clouds with about 50%
cloud coverage most of the day made for easy spotting of birds.
Raptor Observations:
We had quite a wonderful day today with the birds flying fast and high
overhead due to the brisk winds (no ketteling today). We had 10 species of
raptors with the highlight being an adult Golden Eagle at 3:27pm. Dave
Hunter first spotted this bird at quite a distance coming head-on where we
all brushed it off as a Black Vulture at first. But due to Dave's
persistence with this bird, he brought it to our attention again a little
while later as it was nearly over us. Thanks to some nice, slow circling
overhead, we quickly realized it was an adult Golden Eagle. In addition, we
had 3 Bald Eagles and also had all 3 falcon species today with our first
Merlin, 2 Peregrine Falcons, and a strong showing of Kestrels. The
Broad-Winged Hawks were all streaming high and fast overhead in groups up
to 21 in size. The hourly Broad-Winged counts were: 11 (8-9am), 35
(9-10am), 33 (10-11am), 39 (11-12pm), 36 (12-1pm), 35 (1-2pm), 74 (2-3pm),
63 (3-4pm), and 104 (4-5pm).
Non-raptor Observations:
Monarchs are picking up with over 96 today. 10 hummingbirds and a
Red-Headed Woodpecker. Two tight flocks of shore birds flew low through the
gap from west to east (one had ~75 birds and another had ~40).
Predictions:
Chance of showers

Weather:
Absolutely beautiful day, with strong North winds, good cloud cover to spot
birds, and low humidity. Thermals built up in mid-afternoon, as
temperatures reached the mid-80's.
Raptor Observations:
Broad-winged Hawks made their move today! The afternoon flight, between 2
and 6pm, brought kettle after kettle of hawks overhead. Scope views of 60+
Broad-wingeds happened several times. Last year's high count(392) of
Broad-wingeds at Ashland also occured on September 15th.
A nice September total of 8 Kestrels, 6 Bald Eagles, and 3 Merlins almost
became a sideshow to the Broad-winged spectacle.
Non-raptor Observations:
Monarch butterflies: 12
Predictions:
More winds from the North, partly cloudy, temps in the low 70's. And
hopefully, more Broad-wingeds...

Hitchcock Nature Center Hawkwatch information may be found at:
http://www.pottcounty.com/html/departments7h5.shtml
Site Description:
Hitchcock Nature Center is located in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. The
small town of Crescent is immediately southeast of Hitchcock. The watch
overlooks the Missouri River Valley, and the skyline of downtown Omaha,
Nebraska is easily visible (on clear days) to the southwest. The hawkwatch
at Hitchcock Nature Center is now a full-time operation that logs
approximately 600-800 hours of coverage and counts an average of 13,000
migrating raptors every fall. Besides recording a diverse raptor/vulture
flight of 20 annual or semi-annual species dominated by Turkey Vultures,
Bald Eagles, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Swainson's Hawks, and Red-tailed Hawks,
Hitchcock's observers track large numbers of other abundant avian migrants
ranging from Blue Jays and Red-headed Woodpeckers to Snow Geese and
American White Pelicans. Our fall season runs from 15 August to 20 December
with the peak period for raptor migration running from approximately 20
September to 20 October. Counts are now conducted daily from the 56-foot
hawktower attached to the HNC Lodge between 1 September and 20 December.
Counting in August is part-time.
Directions to site:
From Omaha NE, take I-680 north to the Crescent Exit. Take Iowa 988 into
Crescent. At the "T" junction with Old Lincoln Hwy. (formerly Iowa 183),
take a left north and drive for approximately five minutes until you see
the Hitchcock Nature Center sign. Take a left at the sign, and drive up the
hill. At the top of the hill, take a right. Enter the nature center and
follow the signs to the Lodge.
From Council Bluffs IA, take I-29 north and take the Crescent exit. The
rest of the directions are as above...

talking hawks with us...good luck the rest of the way.
Other hikers-11. And can't forget Ellen--your determination paid off in
some late day broad-wings, an eagle, and that peregrine & its stunning

Some exciting aerial battles: SS & ML, AK & ML, RT & OS, and AK & RT.
Last bird of day @ 6:52, what else, but a gray ghost with the sun
setting...a great finish to a memorable day.
Non-raptor Observations:
TVs.
