Good cloud cover of 50-85% almost all day until the last hour or so, winds
NNE-NE2,63-72 degrees F.
Raptor Observations:
We were graced by a third day of unusually high BW numbers for our lookout.
Hourly totals EST: 9:30(10), 10(132), 11(1606), 12(515), 1(450), 2(677),
3(185), 4(22). Like a significant part of yesterday's flight, kettles up
until the 12:00 hour were distant to the north over Lynchburg, and this was
verified by over 2000 seen by Mark Johnson in Amherst Co and around 800 or
so by Robert Ferrell in Lynchburg today. Likewise, yesterday John
Williamson in Bedford County reported over 5000; all locations east of the
Blue Ridge. After 12:00 thankfully kettles and streams I detected were
either closer on the north or on the south side of the ridge and also
closer. By early afternoon most birds'height was a 4 A merlin today was
nice as we get 0-2 during September counting. The flight was pretty strong
into the afternoon again as yesterday, so maybe there are a significant
number still pointed in our direction for tomorrow. Our daily Broadwing
counts the last three days have been our highest, fourth highest, and fifth
highest counts in our eleven year history.
Non-raptor Observations:
Monarch - 294
Dragonflies - 71
RT Hummer - 1
Blue Jays - 10

Report submitted by Gene Sattler (edsattle(AT)liberty.edu)
Site Description:
Candler Mountain is located on the southeast edge of Lynchburg, VA, in
Virginia's Inner Piedmont. It is 45 miles SSE of Rockfish Gap and 32 miles
E of Harvey's Knob. The primary site is a bare knob known locally as the
"Bald Spot". It is part of a minor ridge that parallels the Blue Ridge
Parkway, which is 16 miles to the NW. The bare knob offers a 360 degree
view from an elevation of 1336 feet. The Candler Mountain count is in its
twelfth year, and is sponsored by the Liberty University Department of
Biology and the Lynchburg Bird Club. The count is currently conducted only
from early September to the end of the month because of a shortage of
counters.
For directions to the lookout visit "virtual birder.com" and take the
"Backgrounder" link. Next choose "Hawk Watch", then "Find A Watch", and
scroll down to Virginia, or contact me.

kettles went through between 12p.m. and 1 EST when 234 were tallied. The
Bald Eagle was a 3-4 yr. old and went due S around 10:45 a.m.
Non-raptor Observations:
14 Monarchs, 1 Black-thraoted Green, 1 Empi flycatcher (probably a Willow).

Visitors:
Hard to tally the total number of folks at the watch today with people
coming and going but 75+ were there at any given time from mid morning
onward.
Weather:
Sunshine prevailed throughout the day today with a fair amount of high
cloud cover. Winds were non-existent for much of the early part of the day,
becoming light and variable then light to moderate southeast by late
morning.
Raptor Observations:
Movement overall was quite stagnant today, quite expected given the
conditions, with little in the way of variety, perhaps a bit disappointing
for those gathered for our annual Hawkfest. Sharpies were the only species
that flew in any sort of numbers moving in a consistent pace throughout the
day.
Non-raptor Observations:
Warblers continued to keep people entertained today highlighted by several
Parulas that were in attendence along with the usual Cape Mays, Blackpolls
and such. A Sora was seen early in the day from the Cherry Island trail
bridge in the usual spot that has produced sightings in the past.

Nancy & George, Sarah Splaun, Marlene Condon, Robt Butler, Allen Larner and
Janice Frye, Ed and Donna Lewis, Elmer and Jennifer Gaden, Lois Gebhardt,
Mike and Evelyn Shank, and many, many others.
Weather:
Heavy dark cloud cover for most of the morning extending up and down the
ridge with pockets of blue and sunshine and brighter skies to the east and
west. A low heavy haze over much of the valley early morning made it near
next impossible to locate the distant morning flight of Broadwing. Cloud
cover gradually diminished by mid afternoon. A bit chilly, especially when
sitting in the shade with low of 15c increase to 21.5c.
Humidity: 61<49>69%;
Bar.Pressure: holding steady at 1021;
Raptor Observations:
At the end of yesterday’s late afternoon Broadwing flight, a kettle was
observed disbanding and dropping down to the trees to our north. Counters
were on hand by 7 a.m. EST hopeful to catch an early morning liftoff.
There was just the hint of a westerly breeze at times shifting from the NE
and a thick haze hung in the air. The first hour was null and void of
migrating raptors. The counters and visitors trickling in that first hour
spent time watching several species of warblers and other migrating
passerines as they flitted about the hillside vegetation.
It would be another hour before the first Broadwings of the day were
spotted, And then the gates opened up and it was pretty much a continual
flow of kettling and streaming BW out over the western valley. Hundreds
upon hundreds were seen rising up out of the trees, circling and climbing
higher forming tall swirling columns with birds eventually streaming out
onto to form more kettles as they drifted SW. It was difficult at best in
keeping the birds in view using spotting scopes as they would flicker in
and out and altogether disappear in the thick haze. Two counters
positioned with spotting scopes and clickers counted off over 1300 BW. By
9 a.m. EST, over 35 observers were on hand to see over 900 more before
things slowed down for the next several hour, at times trickling in one at
a time. By late afternoon, after strained eyes were screaming for relief,
small groups were emerging out of the clouds, some slowing down to kettle
before streaming across the gap and overhead. A few kettles contained over
50 birds, swirling higher and higher, slowly drifting SW out over
Waynesboro to the NNW. By 5:15 EST the last group of birds swirled over
the western slope with the bulk of the birds turning east and dropping down
into the trees, joining the earlier group of birds.
Today’s flight of BW: 1361(8-9); 967(9-10); 52(10-11); 113(11-12);
26(12-1pm); 113(1-2); 20(2-3); 512(3-4); 221(4-5); 11(5-5:15)
BAEA: adult at 3:29 and a 3rd year at 4:15 p.m.
Non-raptor Observations:
Black-throated Green Warbler (quite a few, including 4 in same bush);
Prairie Warbler, Mourning Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart,
American Redstart, Scarlet Tanager (female); Indigo Bunting (several);
hummingbird: 1
Red-headed Woodpecker

Light westerly winds mostly from the WNW in the morning. At midday a lake
breeze took effect and winds changed to the SE. Skies were partly cloudy
with sun throughout the day. At times you could see the effect in cloud
formation and movement of the westerly flow countered by the lake breeze.
High temp for the day was 76F.
Raptor Observations:
Our 1st Swainson's Hawk of the season! A juvenile that flew directly
overhead. Other raptors of note were the two unidentified raptors we saw.
Both had pointed wings and modified to high dihedrals. They could have
been Swainson's Hawks too but their distance was too great to make the
call.
Non-raptor Observations:
155 Cedar waxwings, 59 Common night hawks, a Semi-palmated Plover,
Ruby-throated hummingbird, and a loon of undermined species.
1 red, 1 blue-green & 4 silver balloons

Weather:
It was partly to mostly cloudy all day long. It was around 40% early, and
then it changed to 90% later. At the end of the day it was back to 40%.
Visibility was good for the day.
Raptor Observations:
It was about the same as the day before. Less numbers, but birds moved
early then slowed up later. High count was with Sharp-shinned Hawks at 99
for the day. Cooper's Hawks and American Kestrels also made up most of the
count.
Non-raptor Observations:
Predictions:
Sounds like it might change from North-East winds overnight to
West-North-West for the next day. So it could be really good.

Report submitted by Joan and Bob (icepeep(AT)aol.com)
Site Description:
Snickers Gap Hawkwatch was established in 1990. It is located in
northern Virginia, on the Clarke and Loudoun County line. It is reached by
taking VA Route 7 to the county line, which runs atop the ridge at Snickers
Gap. On the south side of Route 7 is a commuter parking lot. The count is
conducted from there. It is a volunteer site, and is counted in fall only,
from late August until late November or early December. There are no
facilities at the site, so bring a snack, drinks, and a chair. Many of the
birds can be distant, and a scope is helpful.
As a volunteer site, we are always looking to increase our pool of
counters. We are eager to train those who have never counted, but are
skilled with hawk identification. We are also willing to pair
inexperienced observers with experienced counters. Please contact the
compiler, Todd Day, at blkvulture(AT)aol.com with any questions or if you are
interested in participating in the count.

350 visitors. Thank you to everyone who made our raptor release a success
today! Thank you for coming out and supporting the Raptor Observatory,
buying t-shirts and hats and becoming members of NH Audubon!
Thank you Rick and Susannah Minard, Kate Yard, Francie Von Mertens, Polly
Patteson, Jon Atwood, Phil Brown, Lance Tanino, Tom Warren, MA Audubon and
everyone else who helped out.
Weather:
Great day to release a raptor. Sunny with light south winds. We sure could
have used some clouds though, too much blue sky made it difficult to spot
birds.
Raptor Observations:
A few great looks at low birds in the am but got increasingly higher
thoughout the day. Three eagles were a hit today, 2 of which moved north.
Close merlin overhead and kestrels. We successfully released a juvenile
broad-winged hawk in front of a big crowd. It cooperated nicely in the
hand, and upon release-quickly diappeared along the eastern side of the
mountain. Good luck on your journey south!
Non-raptor Observations:
pileated woodpecker, hairy woodpecker, yellow-rumped warbler, blackpoll
warbler, ruby-crowned and golden-crowned kinglet, great blue heron
Monarchs: 5
ruby-throated hummingbirds: 1
Predictions:
It looks like a good day ahead. Were expecting some sun and clouds with
winds from the NW, 5-10mph. Are there any broadwings left to move?
Hopefully a day or two left of some good kettles!

Many! Thanks to all who attended the first day of the "Big" Festival of
Hawks. Many activities for young and old. AND good birding from the tower.
Over 400 Sharp-shinned Hawk passed the Tower today and were viewed by the
many visitors. I over heard one gust say, "I finally learned how to ID the
Sharpies!" Tomorrow we will try another species.
Weather:
Comfortable day. Wind less than 6 mph and mostly South. temp 20.3-26.4 C,
Pressure 30.34-30.27 in Hg falling slowly, cloud cover 40%>75%.
Raptor Observations:
Many Sharpies. South winds prevented others from showing higher numbers.
Osprey were moving about with one individual staying around again. Good
looks from Tower of all species.
Non-raptor Observations:
Few non-raptors. First day with Blue Jay numbers above 10! Several 'flocks'
with 10-20 birds. Last hour two groups of 10 screaming into the woods
avoiding real or unreal winged-predators.
Solitary Sandpiper (2 together!), Cardinal, Catbird 2, Hummer 1 (numbers
seem very low), Killdeer, Goldfinch 38+, Waxwings 26+, Pectoral sandpipers
(7), chickadee, gnatcatcher, magnolia War., B&W War., Blackpoll War.
Predictions:
A weak cold front is supposed to pass through over night and have minimum
precipitation but will lower the temperature and have North component winds
following. North component winds are raptor wind. Be there Sunday!

They made us wait 'til the end of the day today. At three minutes to five
we had seen about 450 Broadies for the day - then 4500 blasted in by
six. A couple thousand spent the night in the Polliwog Pond area so we
expect a small though distant east lift-off in the morning. Come see us!
Libby
----------------------------------
Thanks, Libby.
The daily reports don't come to me in time to let you all know of possible
liftoffs or set downs ahead of time, but as we're entering into the peak
passage period, let me remind everyone of a good rule of thumb: anticipate
every morning could have a liftoff and every evening could have a set down,
at least for the next seven days. So, if you're in our area, and aren't
sure, come on out anyway and you might be surprised with a larger event
than expected! We've all seen that before, heaven knows; certain numbers
set down the night before, and then a whole bunch more show up just before
dark when the hill's been cleared and no one knows, or others that came in
out of sight farther north, east or west decide to sort themselves out and
come to within the park's range overnight. And wow, the next morning, where
did all those hawks come from at lift off!? <grin!> Besides, the counters
always enjoy your company and frankly, can really use the help in tracking
all of those individual flights and kettles that start out small and build
into a bigger flight during lift offs. Likewise, at the end of the day,
sometimes the last-minute "oh-no-the-thermals-are-dying!" flights come in
from a few different directions at once. Not always in big numbers
(sometimes in big numbers!), but it's so helpful to have as many eyes in
the skies as possible to help the counters keep track of them. So, word up:
be ready to count them, and they shall come!
The cool weather has been an absolute blessing this week. It's getting a
little warmer each day now, but nothing like the temps we're used to for
this time of September. Temps are still in the 80's, creeping to the low
90's they say, but still heavenly comfortable!
Cheers,
Patty Waits Beasley
