Report submitted by Gene Sattler (edsattle(AT)liberty.edu)
Site Description:
Candler Mountain is located on the southeast edge of Lynchburg, VA, in
Virginia's Inner Piedmont. It is 45 miles SSE of Rockfish Gap and 32 miles
E of Harvey's Knob. The primary site is a bare knob known locally as the
"Bald Spot". It is part of a minor ridge that parallels the Blue Ridge
Parkway, which is 16 miles to the NW. The bare knob offers a 360 degree
view from an elevation of 1336 feet. The Candler Mountain count is in its
twelfth year, and is sponsored by the Liberty University Department of
Biology and the Lynchburg Bird Club. The count is currently conducted only
from early September to the end of the month because of a shortage of
counters.
For directions to the lookout visit "virtual birder.com" and take the
"Backgrounder" link. Next choose "Hawk Watch", then "Find A Watch", and
scroll down to Virginia, or contact me.

Cool, partly cloudy, light west wind.
Raptor Observations:
Looks like we've reached the last of the big Broadwing flights unless we
get some strays from the west. It was great while it lasted.
Non-raptor Observations:
A few nice looks at migrating birds up the trail including: a coy Wilson's,
and a Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, and a
Worm-eating Warbler, a (Yellow) Redstart, and a Red-eyed Vireo. Seven
species of woodpecker were seen and Tree Swallows and Chimney Swifts. A
Walking Stick and Preying Mantis, and various butterflies graced us with
their presence too.

Site Description:
Snickers Gap Hawkwatch was established in 1990. It is located in
northern Virginia, on the Clarke and Loudoun County line. It is reached by
taking VA Route 7 to the county line, which runs atop the ridge at Snickers
Gap. On the south side of Route 7 is a commuter parking lot. The count is
conducted from there. It is a volunteer site, and is counted in fall only,
from late August until late November or early December. There are no
facilities at the site, so bring a snack, drinks, and a chair. Many of the
birds can be distant, and a scope is helpful.
As a volunteer site, we are always looking to increase our pool of
counters. We are eager to train those who have never counted, but are
skilled with hawk identification. We are also willing to pair
inexperienced observers with experienced counters. Please contact the
compiler, Todd Day, at blkvulture(AT)aol.com with any questions or if you are
interested in participating in the count.

Weather:
Cloudy cover was around 35% all day. Visibility was good all day long.
The winds were light or none all day long. When we had wind it was light
at about 3-5MPH from the North-West. Later in the day it changed to South
or South-West.
Raptor Observations:
It was a good day but with many very high with the light winds. The
Sharp-shinned Hawk count was the highest total at 185. Cooper's Hawks and
American Kestrels were also high at 93 for Cooper's Hawks and 89 for
American Kestrels.
Non-raptor Observations:
A Cliff Swallow was seen flying around, and a Parasitic Jaeger. Then late
in the day a Whimbrel was heard and seen flying over. Early we also had a
mixed flock of Brown-headed Cowbirds and Rusty Blackbirds fly over.
Predictions:
It should be slow, since winds will be light and from the North-East.
Birds should be high up like today also.

Southerly winds were dominant today, which clearly did not help our quest
in spotting migrant raptors over our site. However, it was a beautiful fall
day. Clouds were fairly scarce, adding additional challenges for
hawkwatching today. Winds SSW in the morning, shifting to S by the second
half of the count day.
A little warmer today with temps ranging from 60-78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Raptor Observations:
Three Bald Eagles flew over within a five minute period.
A juvenile bird at 13:20, a 3rd year bird at 13:20, and an adult at 13:25
A slow day for counting migrant hawks.
Non-raptor Observations:
23 Monarch Butterflies were noted making their journey south.
Predictions:
Partly sunny. Patchy fog in the morning. Highs in the mid 70s. Northeast
winds 5 to 10 mph.

The Hawk Festival brought many visitors today...at times the tower was
loaded to maximum capacity on the top level. I was happy to meet up with
old friends, and made a few new ones. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE HELP
SPOTTING THE BIRDS TODAY!!
Weather:
Morning haze with total cloud cover. Northerly winds lasted all day, and
by the 9 o'clock hour the skies cleared and we had very few clouds. A
beautiful day for the last day of summer, but the sunshine drove the birds
VERY high quite early today.
Raptor Observations:
A great raptor day with 11 species including large numbers of Broad Winged
hawks, Sharp Shinned hawks, and American Kestrels. We had a unusual number
of Peregrine Falcons today with 9 counted. Our resident Bald Eagles put on
a day long show for guests, along with the Osprey who has been hanging out
for the last week.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays and American Gold Finch were on the move today in groups of 20 to
50 birds. Blue Jays number about 1000 for the day, Gold Finch about 300 -
400. Also sighted were 2 Caspian Terns, one early, and one in the last
hour of the count. We also had: Chimney Swifts, Norther Flicker, Red
Headed Woodpecker, Tree Swallows.

Audubon Society of Forsyth County advertised today as a public education
event and unveiled a display about Pilot Mountain and the hawk migration
phenomenon. We had many public visitors who had an opportunity to learn
about the migration.
Weather:
Skies were partly cloudy with increasingly fair skies late in the
afternoon. Temperatures are cool (15-19C), RH was generally in the 50s, and
barometric pressure averaged about 30.25. Winds were out of the NE at
levels 2-3. We continued to have haze on the Appalachian ridge line that
limited visibility somewhat until after 2 p.m.
Raptor Observations:
There was one 85-bird kettle of Broad-winged Hawks, but otherwise they came
through in small numbers with only 230 for the day. We continued to have
Ospreys and Bald Eagles (5 and 2, respectively, We also had 2 Peregrine
Falcons, one of which was seen perched early in the morning. We had
approximately 23 people observing for at least part of the day.

Raptor Observations:
Small groups of 7, 5, and 4 Broad-winged Hawks can hardly be called
kettles, but we'll take them. A Merlin came by, but he was headed north.
Non-raptor Observations:
First Red-breasted Nuthatch of the season(spotted by Judy), along with a
Nashville Warbler that visited our site. Thousand of migrating Green
Darners, along with dozens of Chimney Swifts still heading south.
Predictions:
Winds from the NE, sunny and 70's, and perhaps once last push of
Broad-winged Hawks...
