Visitors:
There were 18 visitors today.
Weather:
Weather looked good for migration with a south wind turning southwest.
However, there was a seabreeze that started around 9:30 that may have
stopped more birds from passing by here.
Raptor Observations:
Two local Bald Eagles put on a great show chasing each other right above
the lookout. Almost half of the birds counted today were Red-tailed Hawks
that peaked in the early afternoon.
Non-raptor Observations:
Today was a great day for non-raptors. Raptors are not the only birds on
the move! We had a good blackbird movement with 620 Common Grackles, 256
Red-winged Blackbirds, 4 Brown-headed Cowbirds, and 362 unidentified
blackbirds. Corvid movement was also very impressive with 294 American
Crows and 2 Common Ravens. A few finches made an appearance with 5 Purple
Finches, 1 Evening Grosbeak, 3 American Goldfinches, 1 White-winged
Crossbill, and 1 Pine Siskin. 21 Common Mergansers flew by in 4 seperate
flocks, 103 Canada Geese, and 14 American Robins. Finally, two great
highlights were a flock of 42 Brant and the first Mourning Cloak butterfly
of the spring.
Predictions:
West winds tomorrow could produce some birds! Also, the weather is
fabulous now for the middle of March so there are no excuses to make your
way up to the lookout!

A balmy spring day, especially for mid-march. Moderate northeasterly winds
made site 3 on the side of the escarpment a productive and pleasant
hawkwatching experience in the early afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Nice runs of red-shouldered hawks and red-tailed hawks. Several kettles
afforded nice comparisons between the two species.
One migrating immature bald eagle was sighted away from the official count
location and not included in the official HMANA count; one non-migrant
adult bald eagle was observed against the rotting near-shore ice of Lake
Erie from the side of the escarpment--pretty dramatic.
Non-raptor Observations:
Tom Wasilewski, Mike Ceci and Jann Randell assisted with observations.
Predictions:
Warm, southwesterly winds. Could be good!

Visitors:
8 or so people came out.
Weather:
Started the first hour at the North count location. The winds were very
light if any. Then moved to the South location for the rest of the time.
Winds went from about 4-8mph, down to 0-5mph, then back up to 7-12mph the
last hour. It was sunny as it was just about 0% cloud cover most of the
time.
Raptor Observations:
This was the best day so far. Over 100 Red-tailed Hawks. 19
Red-shouldered Hawks were also counted. This was also the highest daily
total of the season so far with over 200 counted.
Non-raptor Observations:
A season first Carolina Wren could be heard and then later seen at the
North count location.
Predictions:
It should be a good day. I would guess about like today. Maybe a little
slower depending how much wind comes from the West vs. South. They are
calling for WSW winds changing to the West, and then later back to WSW.
They should be at around 10mph. It should be easier to see birds with it
being partly cloudy.

Report submitted by Sandra Horvath ()
Beamer Conservation Area, Grimsby, ON information may be found at:
http://www.hwcn.org/link/niaghawk/
Site Description:
The hawk migration at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area is conducted by
the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH). The counting is all done by
volunteers. Not all members are counters nor does a counter have to be a
member. Typically one person is the designated counter for each day but
other observers present assist with the spotting and identification.
Counting is done from a steel observation tower with a wooden floor. For
wind protection on the cold days of March, a black plastic wind guard is
installed around the towers platform. This platform easily accommodates
ten people but on most busy days, no more than five or six observers would
be on it.
The site lies within a publically accessible property owned by the Niagara
Peninsula Conservation Authority. There is no charge for admittance. The
tower stands in the centre of a mowed area with a gravel ring road near the
outer edge. This provides lots of room to park vehicles (along the road)
and set up lawn chairs, telescopes and cameras. Toilet facilities are
present. During the counting season, the NPH erect a counting board to
display the days observations for the public. The box enclosing the sign
contains brochures and silhouette sheets for the public as well as bulletin
boards with news and historical sighting records.
Photos courtesy of Mike Street and Barry Cherriere
Directions to site:
To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 72, follow Christie St./Mountain
St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road West, and go
1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to the
conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If
parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your
car.

mountain ridge on their way north in the 9-10 hour and a single juvenile
Double-crested Cormorant circled high above the ridge in the 1-2 hour
before heading northeast.
