And I just saw my first Ruby-Throat of the season -- a
male, feeding from both my feeders in the back yard as
it started to rain! Hurrah for hummers returning!!

From: <welchd(AT)peoplepc.com>

I, too, had my first ruby-throated of the year, a male, arrive at my
feeder this morning. He's been to feed several times in between the
drizzlings of rain. There are plenty of blooming azaleas for him to
enjoy. Now it's really spring!

Subject: Very busy week bird wise
From: "KC Foggin" <KCFoggin(AT)sc.rr.com>
Date: 8 Apr 2006 3:48pm
I've seen more American Goldfinches this week than the whole winter. The socks
are finally getting a good workout with my having to fill all four daily this
week. Sunflower hearts are being drained pretty fast as well. I supposed they
are getting ready to leave :( but boy are they ever coming into some gorgeous
color.
Female Ruby-throats continue their sparring and the male has showed himself
quite frequently today.

Birders,
"Stuck" at home this weekend, our Ruby-throated Hummingbird made its
first return appearance of the season for my birthday, this past Thursday.
Also, heard a Black-throated Green singing away "zee zee zee zoo zee" in
the yard this morning.
Cheers,
Jeff

Subject: another sign of spring--Brown Thrasher nestings
From: "John Fussell" <jfuss(AT)clis.com>
Date: 8 Apr 2006 4:46pm
Today noticed some very noisy Brown Thrasher nestlings in the backyard.
The eggs were obviously laid in March.

2 Rufous Hummers have shown up in Morehead this week. One is an adult
male. The other sounds like a female from the description (guess I
really should say Selasphorus sp).

Subject: American Tobacco Trail, etc.
From: Sandy Cash <lcashjr(AT)nc.rr.com>
Date: 8 Apr 2006 8:16pm
Running this morning on the American Tobacco Trail in So. Durham County
and No. Chatham County, I heard OVENBIRD (at least five, probably more),
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (several, especially in the power line cut), FIELD
SPARROW, NORTHERN PARULA (probably scads along Northeast Creek, I
couldn't have begun to count), WHITE-EYED VIREO, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH,
and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. I also flushed a single hen WILD TURKEY
from the power line cut. Yesterday I found a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL
in one of the swampy beaver ponds at Southpointe, along with a pair of
MALLARD parents showing off three ducklings.
I have what a suspect (perhaps simply hope) is a pair of nesting BROWN
THRASHERS in my yard - I've seen no sign of chicks, but they definitely
appear to be a pair, and they're pretty consistent about returning to
the same brush pile after feeding - but my brush pile is pretty
good-sized and covered with old blackberry and carpet rose canes, so
there's no chance of my getting close enough to look.
I also had my first RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD of the year in the yard today.
Good Birding,
-Sandy

Subject: Mourning doves
From: Buddy Garrett <medxam(AT)ncfreedom.net>
Date: 8 Apr 2006 10:31pm
Well, what the books say about "flimsy" nests for Mourning doves is
really true!
We have one nesting in a 15 foot palm just outside our
screened-in-porch. on a single frond. The eggs (2) hatched in the
appropriate 2 weeks and the chicks are fiine so far, if I can keep the
rat snakes away. One was on the deck today.
Fortunately the stormy weather was not enough tonight to destroy the nest.
