[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Wife unfairly denied Raptor Center trip :) You can help! From: <amadave(AT)charter.net> Date: 29 Apr 2006 4:15pm Hi Carolina Birders! My poor wife, who does not regularly accompany me on birding trips but does love birds of prey, is being denied a trip to the Carolina Raptor Center that she has long wanted by her "list crazy" husband. As I've noted in previous postings here, I'm a disabled birder and do most of my birding from my car or a motorized scooter. Therefore, I still have not seen a number of birds that most good birders would have seen in childhood. I just got my lifer Great Horned Owl in Kansas three weeks ago, for example. I've told my wife for years that I'll gladly take her to the Raptor Center as soon as I see the really common raptors and owls in the wild. I now have only one to go. SO...Carolina Birders you may be able to free my wife from this injustice! Does anybody know of any reliable Screech Owls anywhere in the central two-thirds of North Carolina? LOL In the name of justice and fairness, we thank you, Dave Hardin (on behalf of Amanda, though she doesn't know it) Newton, NC Carolina Birders, you may be able to
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Mississippi Kites - Lexington County SC From: "Parkin Hunter" <parkin(AT)parkinhunter.com> Date: 29 Apr 2006 4:36pm April 29, 2006: Saw four Mississippi Kites flying over the sludge farm fields (12:30 pm) at the intersection of Old Wire Road and Old State Road near Cayce, Lexington County, SC. A Black Vulture was also flying over the fields. On the drive up Old State Road from Cayce, there were three Eastern Kingbirds in the fenced field at the entrance to the Cayce Sewage Plant and saw 6 Indigo Buntings on Old State between the boat landing and I-26. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Ruff, White-rumped Sandpipers during CRBO's shorebird ID workshop From: "Cape Romain Bird Observatory" <crbo(AT)dmzs.com> Date: 29 Apr 2006 8:48pm Today's CRBO Shorebird Identification Workshop turned up a lot of shorebirds, including some rarities. The Santee Coastal Reserve in northern Charleston County provided a perfect (but windy) setting for learning about shorebirds and managed wetlands. I would like to thank today's leaders - Chris Snook, Dennis Forsythe, Craig Richards and Willy Hutcheson. Especially Dennis and Willy -- Dennis for making the sacrifice of leaving early and Willy for then spotting the Reeve and the White-rumped Sandpipers. * If you go birding with Mr. Hutcheson, bring your A-game or he will scoop you on all the rarities. I took a couple of passable images of the Reeve - I will post them to the CRBO website before long. Shorebirds: (18 species) Black-bellied Plover Semipalmated Plover Killdeer Black-necked Stilt Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs Solitary Sandpiper Willet Spotted Sandpiper Dunlin Pectoral Sandpiper WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (2) Semipalmated Sandpiper Least Sandpiper RUFF (Reeve) STILT SANDPIPER (60+) Short-billed Dowitcher Long-billed Dowitcher After the workshop and a seafood lunch in McClellanville, several of us went to the Honey Hill area in the Francis Marion National Forest. In about an hour we saw several good birds. Highlights: Wild Turkey (and her brood) Northern Bobwhite Red-headed Woodpecker Acadian Flycatcher Ovenbird Black-throated Blue Warbler Kentucky Warbler Hooded Warbler Prothonotary Warbler N. Parula Yellow-throated Warbler Pine Warbler --- Nathan Dias Executive Director Cape Romain Bird Observatory http://www.crbo.net/ crbo(AT)dmzs.com P.O. Box 362 McClellanville, SC 29458
