[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Knapp of Reeds (Falls Lake NC) Eagle nest tree down From: Norman Budnitz <norman.budnitz(AT)duke.edu> Date: 28 May 2006 6:05pm I went out to do my monthly Bald Eagle nest monitoring stint this morning at the Knapp of Reeds (Falls Lake NC) eagle nest. NO TREE, NO NEST. There was an adult eagle sitting on a dead snag in the immediate area, but no other eagles were seen. I suspect that the heavy thunderstorms we had in the area the past couple of days were responsible. The nest, which has been used for several years, was built in the top of a dead tree. All that weight at the top of a dead pole does not make for a stable situation in high winds. There had been two chicks in the nest, and it's possible they had already fledged. I'm waiting to hear if any other observers have more recent information as to their welfare. Tough sight to see. Norm -- Norman Budnitz--GSK NTH-M2451 2512 S. Perkins" <rperkins(AT)infionline.net> Date: 28 May 2006 8:00pm This evening while I was watering some newly planted stuff because we've had no rain, I saw two Mississippi kites sailing over my neighborhood on the north side of Fayetteville. Year, state, county, and yard bird. Whee! Bob -- Bob Perkins Historian and general outdoorsman Fayetteville, North Carolina rperkins(AT)infionline.net
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Beaufort/Shackleford, Carrboro IDs From: "Philip N. Cohen" <pnc(AT)unc.edu> Date: 28 May 2006 9:27pm Hello again, I've added some new opportunities for misidentification to the Birds of Carrboro page, for a total of 16 species. (http://www.unc.edu/~pnc/birds/birds.html) I also took a trip to Beaufort and Shackleford banks, and am stumped by the presumed piper and plover I got there. Sure was nice out there (photos linked from page above). Any advice on these would be welcome. Also, my mother believes she saw a Great Gray Owl in Carrboro today: including yellow eyes, no ear tufts, deep single _whoo's_, out during the middle of the day, and very big. Peterson Guide says could come south once in a while. Could it be? Thanks! Philip -- Philip N.
