Subject: Hartsell Cash
From: Sandy Cash <lcashjr(AT)nc.rr.com>
Date: 9 Aug 2006 10:22am
Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is an appropriate post or not, but here we go:
I just wanted to let c-birders know that my father, Hartsell Cash, whom
many of you knew (some well and for a long time), and who taught me much
of what I know about birding, passed away last Tuesday, 2. August. I'll
miss him greatly - long chilly hours in front of a scope at PINWR or
Mattamuskeet just won't be the same w/o him.
Best to all and good birding,
-Sandy

Subject: Yard report, suburban Columbia
From: Jerrold Griggs <griggs(AT)math.sc.edu>

In our yard in the Irmo area of Columbia, SC, the greatly increased
activity of Ruby-throated Hummers means does not mean the hordes reported
by others on the list, but we sometimes see two at a time (when one
chases another away from the feeder). Right now there is a bright
adult male. Earlier one had a spot of pinkish from its gorget--immature
male? Others show no gorget color that I can see.
The level of thistle seed in the tube feeder has been dropping steadily,
thanks to the American Goldfinches that spent the summer (with lots
of help from House Finches, of course).
Overhead this morning I spotted a long-sought-after species, as a
Mississippi Kite circled over the trees. This is yard bird species 118!
I'm running out of "normal" species to look for here.

Dear Sandy,
I, for one, could not imagine a more appropriate
use of this space than to honor the passing
of a birder. I, too, learned to love birds
from my late father. We don't honor our mentors and elders enough.

Subject: Birding Raleigh to Sunset Beach, 09 Aug 2006
From: David Lenat <lenatbks(AT)mindspring.com>
Date: 9 Aug 2006 11:14pm
With a cold front moving through NC, it seemed like to good time to go
look for shorebirds. About 88 species seen today.
_
Raleigh - Lake Wheeler and Reedy Creek Road pond_.
5 Least Sandpipers, 3 Stilt Sandpipers, 1 Gr Yellowlegs
_Stedman Sodfarm_. Habitat looked great (nice and soggy after heavy
rains), but shorebirds still sparse.
20+ Pectoral Sandpipers, 4 Spotted Sandpipers, Flock of Lesser
Yellowlegs (15+), Many mature Horned Larks and the ubiquitous Killdear.
_Cape Fear River at Lock 1_. Dipped on the Swallow-tailed kites, but
did see 1-2 Mississippi Kites.
_Long Beach mudflats_. Terns sparse, with one 1 each of Royal, Caspian
and Forster's. 1 Whimbrel, mature and immature Black-bellied Plovers,
SP Plovers, Willets, Oystercatchers, Skimmers, SP Sandpipers,
Yellowlegs, SB Dowitchers, Sanderlings, 1 Clapper Rail, with usual
gulls, herons, egrets, ibis, etc. One pair of Shrikes at the north end
of the island, but one of these dead on the road.
_Twin Lakes nr Sunset Beach_. Dipped on the Spoonbill, although large
numbers of Wood Storks present late in the afternoon. As expected, saw
BC Night Heron, Red-headed WP, Moorhens and alligators. Marsh Wrens were
seen along the edge of the first pond, and an Anhinga at the second.
One Coot appears to have stayed for the summer.
