[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: RFI for Fall Birding From: Carol Stoner <stonefam(AT)gte.net> Date: 10 Aug 2006 12:05am Greetings all-- I will be making my first trip to NC for a quick week late Sept. - early Oct. Birding will not be the focus of our trip, but I'd appreciate suggestions for birdy spots in the Winston-Salem area as well as the Asheville-Blue Ridge Parkway-Great Smoky Mts. area. We won't be able to do much hiking, so spots accessible by car would be best. Our itinerary is still being developed, so your hints will help me figure out how to slip in as much birding as possible. As a Pacific Northwesterner, I'm looking forward to learning some eastern species. Thanks in advance-- Carol Stoner Renton (outside of Seattle) WA

I had the opportunity to bird with him on many occasions and he helped me many times by telling me where to go for birds. He was a true gentleman and a scholar! He will be missed by all of us, but most of all by Sandy ! May God rest his soul and may we all be as kind to beginning birders as he was to us! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: National Geographic Guide From: Tom Krakauer <tkrakauer(AT)mindspring.com> Date: 10 Aug 2006 9:24am I am going on a cruise out the Aleutians in September. The literature for the trip says that the Nat. Geo. Field Guide 4th Edition is the guide to take. I own the 3rd edition. Are there significant changes between the 3rd and 4th which makes it apporopriate to purchase it? I am a little reluctant if it is not critical because the 5th edition comes out in November. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: birds From: "barbara brooks" <brooksba(AT)visionet.net> Date: 10 Aug 2006 7:31pm I don't have many hummers but for me a record 3. I have 1 mature male and 2 juvenile males as best I can tell. At any rate they are using my feeders a lot more than in previous years. the one by the buddleia is the target of much skirmishing. I swear that they hit each other. While walking the dogs this morning, had a family of yb cuckoos calling to one another. At the barn yesterday, I had 2 juvenile rs hawks calling to the parents and fish and American crows mobbing them. Tempting to say that they were calling for help. all birds in NE orange county. bbrooks Barb Brooks, poet author of the chapbook "The Catbird Sang" Black cap, wings slate gray, feathers dribbled with red.
