[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Lark Sparrow on Roanoke Island From: jeff lewis <jlewis_obx(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 30 Aug 2006 7:46am Hi friends, Our first rain early this morning in probably a month or more (my mailbox was even wilted) and my first Lark Sparrow of the season feeding in the road in front of my house! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Mark your calendar -- Sept 7 -- Program by a searcher for the Ivory Bill Woordpecker- special place for this meeting only From: "Louise Barden" <louise(AT)lbarden.com> Date: 30 Aug 2006 8:14am Don't forget to mark your calendar for next Thursday -- for the Mecklenburg Audubon Society special program. Dr. Robert Fulton will recount his adventures this spring as he looked for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in South Carolina and Arkansas. Next Thursday - September 7 at 7:30 PM SPECIAL MEETING PLACE William R. Davie Conference Center 4635 Pineville-Matthews Road Don't miss it and be sure to bring friends. This is going to be a really interesting evening. Dr. Fulton (known as "the River Geezer") is known as an entertaining and informative speaker. He participated in both of the official searches for the woodpecker this spring with a group of selected other searchers, led by Cornell's experts. For directions and more information. See Search for the Holy Grail Bird at www.meckbirds.org As always we will have refreshments, cold drinks and shade-grown coffee. Paper cups will be there, but if you bring your own mug, you can help prevent waste. Louise Barden Charlotte, NC
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Falls L shorebirds, Inland Ibis From: David Lenat <lenatbks(AT)mindspring.com> Date: 30 Aug 2006 3:16pm Visited the Stedman Sod Farm yesterday in scorching heat. It was very dry (no pools), although still with good numbers of Pectoral SP and a few Least SP. The surprise was a flock (35-40) of White Ibis, all immature. I'm hoping for heavy rains in this area soon! With the forecasted rains tomorrow, it seems that the mud flats may be lost at Falls Lake. Since this might be my last chance for a while, I hauled put the kajak and visited the area above I-85. Most of the shorebirds were found on a single mud flat, not too far upstream of I-85. Although there were many muddy areas along the shoreline, this region did not attract shorebirds. The lone mud flat did not produce anything too exciting, but it had reasonable diversity: Killdear - many throughout lake Pectoral SP - about 30 Least SP - about 30 Semipalmated SP - About 20 Western SP - 1 Semipalmated Plover - 4 Short-billed Dowitcher - 1 Lesser Yellowlegs - 2 Dave Lenat, Raleigh
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Hatteras pelagic trip/motels From: lois(AT)duke.edu Date: 30 Aug 2006 8:27pm If anyone is wondering what to do this weekend, not only is Brian running a trip from Hatteras on Sunday (space is available), but there are actually motel rooms available too. I just reserved a room at the Cape Pines motel, so don't let the thought that tourists have overwhelmed accomodations stop you. With Eduardo possibly bringing warm water birds from the south, I can't imagine anything more fun than being at sea and watching shearwaters, petrels, and storm petrels! If anyone else from Durham wants to come along, I'm leaving sometime on Saturday and returning Monday afternoon or evening. Give me a call if you want to come.
