[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Reports 03/09/06 Northern Shrike From: CT Bird Report <CTBirdReport(AT)msbx.net> Date: 9 Mar 2006 10:25pm Note: I missed including Luke Tiller as the one who found and reported the Northern Shrike yesterday. From Luke Tiller with Penny Solum: 3/09 - Wilton, Allens Meadows -- 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE.  I relocated the shrike I found yesterday between 8.25am - 8.35am, at first in the line of trees next to the community gardens and later in the taller trees surrounding the pond. The bird is very mobile - covering the lengths of the ballfields in one bound and vanishes for periods. A little patience and some luck seems to be required (or more people searching) and it took an hour to locate the bird this morning. Hopefully more reports to come. 3/09 - Milford, Merwin Point -- 5+ Northern Pintails 3/09 - Milford, Caswell Cove -- 1 adult Iceland Gull Paul Carrier, Dorothy Mathis: 3/09 - Harwinton -- pair COMMON REDPOLLS at feeder for 4 weeks, still coming daily. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Reports 03/10/06 From: CT Bird Report <CTBirdReport(AT)msbx.net> Date: 10 Mar 2006 10:29pm From Dennis Varza: 3/10 - Bridgeport, Beardsley Park (11:30 AM) -- Trumpeter Swan. The bird was first observed standing on the ice with gulls by the dam. The large size (even for a swan), neck shape and all black bill was very striking. The process of getting out of the truck and setting up my scope made it nervous, bobbing head up and down. The bird then flew off to the southwest before I could get my camera out. Wild or Escape "You make the call". NOTE: The question of where a Trumpeter Swan in CT might have come from is very complicated. Not only have there been cases of them escaping from captivity, but the nearest population is "hacked" - a project to restore them in an area where they have not been breeding. To complicate relocation further, Tundra swans can be passing through at this time of year. From not sure who, via Mardi Dickenson: 3/10 - Wilton, Allens Meadows -- Northern Shrike seen early From Tom and Ryan Sayers: 3/09 - Somers -- Thousands of mixed blackbirds in the Pinney Rd. area of Somers.
