Stranded inland after a storm seems to be expected way to encounter this species in Connecticut. Also, 1 Peregrine low over I-91 near Trumbull St New Haven about 10AM. From E.J. Raynor: 12/17 - East Haven, Proto Drive -- 12:30-1:15, White-crowned Sparrow 1 Gambell's present on and off, seen best when large number of sparrows were feeding. "The Barkhamsted CBC is Saturday with count week starting tomorrow. Although I will be watching for sightings listed from the areas (e.g. Pine Grosbeaks), please include any other unusual birds for Northern CT. Waterfowl is becoming huge right now as the reservoirs (Barkhamsted & Nepaug) and lakes are rapidly freezing. You never know what may be missed on count day. At address #100 there were 17 PINE GROSBEAKs including 5 males feeding on berry bushes in the front yard of this home. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Report 12/22/2007 BOHEMIAN WAXWING From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net> Date: 22 Dec 2007 10:23pm From Dori Sosensky, Nick Bonomo and Roy Harvey: 12/22 - Norfolk, Shepard Road -- 13 PINE GROSBEAKS in the area of the Norfolk Lions Club Ambulance building and the retirement housing diagonally across the street. Falls Village, Housatonic River Road -- At least one, probably two, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS. The location was about 2.2 miles up (per Dori) to an open hillside with a few scattered crabapple trees on your left. The first was alone at the top of a deciduous tree. It left and flew east, crossing the road and heading for the river. Very shorly later what we believe was the second bird was found at the top of another deciduous tree nearer the road, with two Cedars. That bird also left and flew east, disappearing in the same direction as the first. Also Purple Finches and 8 flyby Common Redpolls. From Phil Asprelli: 12/22 - Hamden, Edmund St. -- 10:00am, (1) Barrow's Goldeneye seen at close range (50 yds) in tidal bay of the Quinnipiac River. Edmund St. is 1 block N of the DMV on State St. in Hamden. Being a tidal bay there is no ice. From Ann Orsillo: 12/22 - Goshen, Marshepaug Road, Crossman farm fields, drive up Beach Street from Litchfield, take left at Newcomb and then right onto Marshepaug (Crossman Road) -- Observed at 8 A.M., 11 PINE GROSBEAKS. From Sara Zagorski via Luke Tiller: 12/22 - Falls Village, Housatonic River Road -- 1 male PINE GROSBEAK in the area of the Bohemian sighting. From John Marshall: 12/22 - East Hartland, Intersection Rte 20 and Mountain Road -- 7:40 AM, 12 PINE GROSBEAKS, as I arrived about 10 flew east down Mountain Rd. One male and one female remained for a couple of minutes and then followed. There is still lots of fruit on the trees in town. The cherry tree in front of town hall is picked almost clean.
