Subject: CT Report 01/21/2008 WESTERN TANAGER
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 21 Jan 2008 10:02pm
From Greg Hanisek, Neil Currie, Randy Domina
1/21 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- WESTERN TANAGER along with 3
Pine Warblers, a Fox Sparrow, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, a Brown
Creeper, several Yellow-rumped Warblers and lots of robins,
white-throats and juncos. American Bittern at Meigs Point blind.
We found the Western Tanager between 1:30 and 2 p.m. along the eastern
edge of the campground, adjacent to the park entrance road. We'd
stopped along the road to look for the Pine Warbler that has been seen
about half way between the toll booths and the main rotary. Most of
the bird activity was on the campground side of the trees lining the
west side of the entrance road, because that was the sunny side.
(More details can be found in Greg's full message on CTBirds.)

new birds showing up daily.

PM)

1/21 - Waterford -- a second-winter Iceland Gull was in a large flock
of gulls on Smith Cove in Quaker Hill (Waterford), between Route 32
and the Thames River off Richard's Grove Road. Gulls typically
congregate at this location before 10:00 in the morning.

Subject: CT Report 01/23/2008 WESTERN TANAGER
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 23 Jan 2008 9:41pm
From John Ogren:
1/23 - Hammonasett SP -- Western Tanager was found at 11 at west side
of campground, west of Mohegan1. It was there for 15 minutes and
flushed to a stand of cedars/junipers further west of Mohegan 1.
Stayed in trees for another 15 min. I left and came back. Nick
Bonomo and I found the bird again at noon in middle of campground 1/2
between campsite 30 and Mohegan 1. Look for large flock of Juncos,
Yellow-rumps, and Pine Warblers.
From Dori Sosensky:
1/23 - Hammonasett SP -- 3:55, Western Tanager in the cedars around
the bathroom Mohegan 1, in the camping area.
From Jim Bair:
1/28/08 - Madison, Hammonassett Beach State Park -- 1 WESTERN TANAGER.
Bird seen by 5 of us from about 2:40 to 2:50 p.m. In the campground
area look for a flock of feeder birds in the vicinity of Camp site #1
or Camp site #30 (they are not that far from each other). This flock
seems to hang around there and grows and diminishes in size as the day
goes on. If you are patient staking this flock out, then hopefully
the Tanager will appear.
From David Gersten:
1/23 - Windsted, industrial park -- 12:30 pm, five Pine Grosbeaks in
the crabtrees in front of the business on International Way (off of
the Industrial Park which is off Rt. 20 north of town off Rt 8). Two
males in the group.

1/23 - West Hartford, Reservoir #6 (route 44) -- 1 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, 1 first winter ICELAND GULL.
From Mike Warner:

Date: 26 Jan 2008 10:00pm
The Western Tanager at Hammonasset State Park in Madison was seen off

by some of those searching for the Western Tanager.

and numbered easily 100-150 birds.

ground feeding)
