Subject: CT Report 01/27/2008 WESTERN TANAGER

From Tom and Ryan Sayers and many others:
1/27 - Madison, Hammonassett State Park -- WESTERN TANAGER seen very
well for 20-30 minutes feeding on the ground with a mixed flock under
isolated trees in the center of the Tunxis camping area around noon.
Also, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in the same mixed flock.

1/27 - Madison, Hammonasset Beach St. Park -- WESTERN TANAGER
continues, seen for at least 20 minutes around 11:00 AM in the same
location as previously reported, together with one ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, at least two PINE WARBLERS and at least two FOX SPARROWS.
Also, the AMERICAN BITTERN was still in the small marsh area near the
blind north of the Meig's Point Nature Center.
1/27 - Southbury, Cassidy Rd., at the intersection with Purchase Brook
Rd. -- NORTHERN SHRIKE continues on the hillside to the east.

1/27 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- the Western Tanager was seen
well up until about 11 am, and then not seen from approximately 11 am
to 1 pm.

Eider.
Holly Pond -- one adult Greater White-fronted Goose with the Canadas
that roost there overnight, departed 8:11 AM heading north.

1/28 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- WESTERN TANAGER (11:25 to
11:35AM) in bittersweet in the cedars; also 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR in
flock of 24 HORNED LARKS.

1/28 - Canaan, 45 Allyndale Rd. -- one adult male RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER seen in maples in front.

1/28 - Stratford, McKinney NWR -- c. 20 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES.

1/28 - Lyme, Elys Ferry Road -- 2 WILSON'S SNIPE at edge of marsh near
end of road.
Old Lyme, Binney Road -- NORTHERN SHRIKE seen very briefly in tree
tops.
Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- tried hard for Orange-crowned
Warbler without success; Western Tanager was seen by a number of
others on and off during the morning and early afternoon

1/28 - Southbury, Southbury Training School -- 1 SHRIKE, ASSUMED TO BE
NORTHERN, since that is what has been seen in the area.

1/28 - South Windsor, Ferry Lane -- VESPER SPARROW. The bird was
feeding with 3 savannah sparrows and several tree sparrows on the
south side of the road, a couple of hundred yards from the base of the
hill. The sparrows feed on corn and seed on the sides and near the
road close to a row of bushes, trees etc..., which runs between two
fields on the north side of the road.

1/28 - Danbury yard -- 2 Common Redpolls at thistle feeder in the
morning.

1/28 - Trumbull yard -- at least 25 COMMON REDPOLLS at 3 nyjer
feeders.

1/28 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- The Western Tanager was seen
at the Hammonasset Mohegan 1 campground for about 5 minutes. It then
flew to the line of cedars described in yesterday's post, where it was
flushed by a Northern Harrier. Time was about 11:30 am. No other
sightings from 7:45 am till then. The Orange-crowned Warbler was seen
a few yards away at Tunxis and a bit further on, at the Hammo entrance
road median. This morning was very quiet but the usuals (2+Fox
Sparrows, 2+ Pine Warblers, partial albino Robin) were present.

1/29 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- Western Tanager seen around
noon (in Moheghan Camp restroom area). Also Orange-crowned Warbler
found by another group of birders in median strip after you drive into
park.

1/28 - Winchester, back-and-forth between 111 and 114 Laurel Way -- 1
NORTHERN SHRIKE

1/28 - Waterford, Quaker Hill, Smith Cove, between Route 32 and the
Thames River off Richard's Grove Road -- at 9:30 an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull was in a large flock of gulls. Gulls typically
congregate at this location before 10:00 in the morning.

1/28 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- The Western Tanager was
intermittently present all morning, but was not seen in the afternoon
as far as I know. The only place it appeared was in the dense grove
of young cedars southwest of the Mohegan I restrooms in front of the
small pond. I believe it was sheltering from the strong and cold
north wind, and eating cedar and possibly bittersweet berries. The
Orange-crowned Warbler seen it in the grove of trees to the west? of
the M-I restrooms. (Towards the campground parking area), mostly on
the ground under the cedars with 1 or 2 Pine Warblers and a single
Robin.

morning around 10:00 in the usual area.

1/31 - Madison, Hammonasset SP, usual campground sites -- on ground &
in trees: Western Tanager (11:45 & 2:20), Orange-crowned Warbler, 2
Pine Warblers, 2 Fox Sparrows; also Red-breasted Nuthatch, 2 Lapland
Longspurs (nice chestnut napes); also American Bittern walked crossed
blacktop from pond/blind area & hid 5 feet from side of road
(orange-red tongue).
