Subject: CT Report 06/17/2009
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 17 Jun 2009 10:27pm
From Chris Elphick:
06/17/09 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- 1 Little Blue Heron, 4-6
Roseate Terns. No sign of the eider or the cattle egrets, though we
didn't look until well after the crowds had built up. And of course
lots and lots of Seaside Sparrows (15+) and Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed
Sparrows (65+).
From Mike Resch:
06/16/09 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -- 2 CATTLE EGRETS at the far SW
part of the park past Swan Pond. 1 Roseate Tern among Common Terns
along Moraine Trail, 4-5 PM.
06/16/09 - Simsbury, Great Pond State Forest -- 2 MISSISSIPPI KITES -
flying overhead NW of the lake. Seen from the southern edge of the
lake. 2:30-2:45, The kites were flying high and far enough away that
they were almost never visible with the naked eye. While scanning
with binocs, I spotted the first bird overhead flying in from the west
soon after I arrived. This bird continued to circle overhead the
entire time I was there. A 2nd bird appeared to the NW and
disappeared over the trees to the north.
From Jan Collins:
06/16/09 - Somers, Billings Rd hay field -- 2 BOBOLINK.

Date: 18 Jun 2009 10:41pm
Note: For the seabird enthusiasts out there, Nick Bonomo posted a
message on CTBirds that should be of interest.
http://lists.ctbirding.org/pipermail/ctbirds_lists.ctbirding.org/Week-of-Mon-20090615/013888.html
From Jerry Connolly:
06/18/09 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -- CATTLE EGRET (1) grassy areas
adjacent to West Beach Parking lot 9:50 AM.
From Dennis Ephick:
06/18/09 - Stratford, Long Beach -- 5 Yellow-crowned Night Herons in
marsh opposite Sikorsky Mem Airport alongside Lordship Blvd. 2
(possibly a pair) Brown Thrashers in rose scrub along beach from
parking lot to Pleasure Island.
From Elaine Taylor:
06/17/09 - Bristol, Fields off Matthews Street and behind the Orchard
Hll development -- BOBOLINKS. I am surrounded by BOBOLINKS. Their
sound is clear and loud and I see breeding males everywhere. But what
is truly amazing is how close to the house they come. This past week
every night around 7:30pm several males come within 5 feet of my back
deck as they call and feed from the lawn. Our presence doesn't bother
them at all.

From Maggie Jones:
06/20/09 - Mystic, Mason's Island -- male Painted Bunting in and
around weedy vegetable garden.
Editor's note: The word I received is that Painted Bunting is in the

would be sensitive to intrusion.

PETREL. Very foggy conditions this morning, brief clearing leaving
port from LI where we also saw four Roseate Terns with several
hundered Common Terns feeding at Plum Gut.

LITTLE BLUE HERONS, one adult, one white immature; 9:00 am.
