[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Report 07/26/2009 From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net> Date: 26 Jul 2009 10:50pm Note: A minimum of 5 Brown Pelicans have been seen on the south shore of Long Island this past week. Past such events have been known to include some visiting Connecticut too, so this is an excellent time to keep your eyes out. (For anything really, not just pelicans!) From Gil Kleiner: 07/26/09 - Simsbury, Great Pond -- had spectular looks of Mississippi Kite in flight for almost ten minutes with and without our bino's, 5:55 PM Sunday. From Maria Stockmal: 07/26/09 - West Haven, Sandy Pt -- one Whimbrel out in the mud flats, two Western Willets in the same area, and one Peregrin Falcon out on the furthest sandbar. From John Oshlick: 07/26/09 - West Haven, Sandy Pt -- a single Marbled Godwit along with the previously reported Whimbrel. The birds flew away after a Peregrine Falcon flew by and I do not know where they went From James Restivo: 07/25/09 -Groton, Eastern Point Beach -- 1 WHIMBREL. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Report 07/27/2009 From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net> Date: 27 Jul 2009 10:28pm From Glenn, Beth, Madeleine, & Eliza Williams: 07/27/09 - Stonington, Stonington Point -- 3 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS. From Meredith Sampson with Fran D'Amico & Ron Pelletier: 07/26/09 - South Windsor, Strong Road -- SEDGE WREN. The wren was mainly heard, giving only a couple of very quick, 1-second views, from before noon to about 12:45. There was a steady breeze which may have kept it low in the grasses. It was in the meadow between the group of farm equipment and the dirt road that cuts through the meadow. 07/26/09 - Torrington, Rte. 202 -- BLACK VULTURE. From Mary Gardner and Dave Provencher: 07/26/09 - Lyme, Nehantic State Forest -- ACADIAN FLYCATCHER singing below beaver pond in forest interior. From Paul Cianfaglione: 07/25/09 - Bloomfield, Samuel Wheeler Park -- 4 EASTERN MEADOWLARK (2 adult, 2 juvenile), 16 BOBOLINK. From John Marshall: 07/25/09 - Stonington, Barn Island WMA -- I heard a Bobwhite call once. It was the Bob-Bob-White call. It was quite clear. I heard it while observing sandpipers in the first impondment. I did a little web research today and found that Bobwhites were released less than 20 miles away in the vicinity of Hope Valley, RI, at the end of May. 07/26/09 - Middlebury, Tranquility Road, north of Route 64 -- Red-headed Woodpecker at the first grove on the right hand side. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: CT Report 07/30/2009 WHITE-FACED IBIS From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net> Date: 30 Jul 2009 9:54pm From Frank Gallo: 07/30/09 - Milford, Silver Sands State Park -- A White-faced Ibis was feeding with 21 Glossy Ibis at Silver Sands State Park this afternoon, on the lawn on the left side of the entrance road, just before you turn left toward the parking lots. A jogger flushed the birds, and they flew into the marsh and river channel just to the east, along the east edge of the park. The channel can be viewed from the south end, just east of the traffic circle, at the very end of the entrance road. The Ibis tend to congregate in the channel and marsh at high tide, or feed on the lawns along the entrance road. I finally relocated the bird in the channel just before two deer flushed all the ibis and shorebirds in the marsh. The flock flew north along the channel but could not be relocated by Frank Mantlik or me. From George Pagliaro with Seth Harvey: 07/30/09 - Middlebury, Tranquility Rd -- Red-headed Woodpecker continues, in the same location, first grove on the right, seen after about 1 h 45m. From Twan Leenders: 07/30/09 - Stratford -- around 10:30: one WHIMBREL foraging on the Short Beach side of Stratford Point with the outgoing tide. Observed for about 5 minutes after which it flew west (toward Stratford great Meadows?) From Paul Cianfaglione: 07/30/09 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER. From Sam Fried: 07/29/09 - Bloomfield house -- fly by Black-crowned Night-Heron, first for my house in 15 years, uncommon inland. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA).
