From: "nuthatch3(AT)aol.com" <nuthatch3@AOL.COM>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 7:52am
Yesterday afternoon I decided to sit outside for a bit. I wanted to watch
for the migrating big birds. I had 4 Broad-winged Hawks, one which kettled
with 2 Red-tailed Hawks then the 3 sailed north. I also saw 1 Northern
Harrier, 1 Coopers Hawk, 1 un-identified falcon (possibly a Merlin), and 38
Double-crested Cormorants. Not a bad raptor day!

From: Ed Maioriello <edm(AT)MAIORIELLO.COM>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 9:12am
Come and join us this Saturday, April 12th, at the Sandy Creek Nature
Center in northern Athens-Clarke County. We will be meeting in the Allen
House parking lot at 8:00AM. You should come prepared with binoculars,
practical shoes for walking and clothing appropriate to the weather. You
can get information about the Sandy Creek Nature Center as well as
directions at http://www.sandycreeknaturecenter.com/scnc/index.php.
As usual, the walks last between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 hours, but one can leave at
any time. The current forecast for Saturday is not particularly favorable,
but we will be out there unless there is lightning - bring that poncho!
If you have any questions please contact me at
fieldtrip(AT)oconeeriversaudubon.org or at 706-208-8504
See you there,
Ed.

From: Johnnie Greene <johnniegreene(AT)ADELPHIA.NET>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 10:32am
Just happened to look out the window where I work (Johnson Square in Marietta,
Johnson Ferry and Roswell Rd area) and saw a Hooded Warbler working his way
through the trees. This is the first time I have seen one here at this site
since I started here a little over a year ago.
I went outside to get a better look and saw a Cooper's Hawk flying overhead. So
far for this office complex I logged 65 species which I consider good for where
it is located. Hopefully I can add more over the course of this year.

Greetings all,
The girlfriend and I went over to Bear Creek Reservoir this morning (9
April). Despite looking for about 2 hours, we had no luck with the
previously reported Bald Eagle. We did have an Osprey, and I saw a Spotted
Sandpiper (FOS) on the island in the middle of the lake.
We also drove down to where the Middle Oconee River crosses GA 330, and had
a Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Greetings again all,
Shoot I forgot to mention, and thanks to Eugenia Thompson for reminding me-
there were but a mere THREE loons at Bear Creek Res this morning! I think
the highest numbers have been reported in the evenings. Perhaps they leave
early in the morning to continue migration and new ones come in the evening
to spend the night?

Yellow-throated warbler
Hooded warbler

Blue-gray gnatcatcher
John Beard, another birder I met in Woodruff Park, had recently seen Kentucky

Subject: Decatur hummingbird
From: Fred Land <adliii(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 9 Apr 2008 4:17pm
Saw my FOTY ruby throated hummingbird this morning. I've kept a pair of feeders
up and running through the winter, but of course he chose to check out the spot
where the 3rd feeder is supposed to be!
Also had a small wave of songbirds pass through here late yesterday afternoon.
We came home around 4:30 to lots of chirping and twittering in the tree tops.
It took enough time to stash groceries that by the time I got outside with
binocs, most of the birds had moved on. But there were still 20ish goldfinches
in the treetops, along with yellow rumps and one black and white warbler.
We also have chimney swifts back in the neigborhood. I saw them for the first
time yesterday, but since we're just back from a short trip to Savannah and
Tybee, I can't say for certain when they showed up here.

You'll are very good today at catching mistakes. Before I get a lot more
email's, let me make another correction to the list. I had white-crowned
Sparrows and marked it off of my list to show White-throated. But I posted White
Crowned Sparrows. A careless mistake. It should have been many White Throated
Sparrows. There also should have been only one listing of Chipping Sparrows and
not 2. In the future I'll try to make my posting after mu nap and not before it.
Good Birding And have a blessed Day.
