[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Clyde Shepard NP report, 5/1 From: Fred Land <adliii(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 2 May 2008 12:48am Highlights from a morning walk at Clyde Shepard Thursday included a small flock (15-20) of cedar waxwings, a nice view of a male summer tanager, a blue grey gnatcatcher, a number of rough wing swallows over the pond and 3 coopers hawks. There are also bluebirds to be found in the neighborhood across the street from the park. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Youth Birding Competition From: Tim Keyes <Tim_Keyes(AT)DNR.STATE.GA.US> Date: 2 May 2008 7:24am Hello GABO, If you are out birding this weekend and run into a group of young birders, there is a good chance they are competiting in the third annual Youth Birding Competition. We have 130 participants this year in 35 teams. As tempting as it may be to point out a gorgeous blackburnian warbler or scarlet tanager to them, they are supposed to both find and identify all the birds they count, so please refrain from helping them. They are allowed to point birds out to you however... so if they are on a really great bird... feel free to ask for help... as there are some pretty talented young birders out there. If you really feel like helping them, ask if you can sponsor them, as many teams are raising funds for the conservation organization of their choice. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Blackpolls/Scarlet Tanager From: "nuthatch3(AT)aol.com" <nuthatch3@AOL.COM> Date: 2 May 2008 8:12am Enjoying a cup of coffee (of course shade grown, organic, and fair trade) on the back porch, I've been watching the birds in the woods. I have oaks, tulip poplars, and box elder trees. I have numerous Blackpolls (have been able to find 3 males and 1 female) and while 2 were in one of the oaks, a male Scarlet Tanager dropped in. There are more than 4 Plackpolls out there in the trees cause you can hear them singing. Wood Thrush continues to sing as well as Eastern Kingbirds coming by. Still missing for my backyard is the Eastern Wood Pewee and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Have a great day! By the way, I live close to Big Creek so I get really good migrants! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Birding Sosbee Cove on Monday From: slaytons(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET Date: 2 May 2008 12:44pm After being down with a back injury for a week, I was happy to get out yesterday and go Birding. It's probably a little too early for Sosbee Cove. But I still had some good Birds. There were many Warbler Species that I have to leave out because I haven't mastered birding by ear when it comes to Warblers. Here are the Highlights: I will put what I think is the short version and then the actual Names: 1. ChSi (Chestnutsided Warblers)Many 2. Ve(Veery) 3. REVI (Red-eyed Vireos) at least 3 4. BHVI (Blue-headed Vireos) 5 5. WEVI (White-eyed Vireo) Only Heard 6. GCFL (Great Crested Flycatcher) Only Heard 7. AmRE (American Redstart Warbler(Many) 2 were fighting and landed at my feet. I could have reached out and picked them up. 8. BlBU (Blackburnian Warbler-male and Female) 9. EATO (Eastern Towhee) Male displaying for Female 10. BTBL(Black-throated Blue Warbler(Male and Female) 11.AMRO (American Robin (a few) 12. WoTh (Wood Thrush) 1 13. RBGR (Rose-breasted Grosbeak)1 Good Birding & have a blessed day Steve Slayton Lawrenceville Gwinnett County 7. ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Least Flycatcher back in Suches From: Grant McCreary <jedigrant(AT)excite.com> Date: 2 May 2008 5:16pm I did a little mountain birding today. The Least Flycatcher reported last year (and maybe prior?) was back in Suches. To reach the spot, continue on GA-60 North from Suches until the intersection with Grizzle Creek Road. There will be a fire station (#11) on your left. You can park there. Across the street from the station is an abandoned house with some conifers around it (you can't miss it). The bird was in these trees. It was "che-bek"-ing constantly. Unfortunately, that's about the only thing worth reporting. Ivy Log Gap Road had a ton of singing birds, even around noon, but none that I heard were Cerulean or Blackburnian. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Be careful what you PISH for From: Patty McLean <plm108(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 2 May 2008 5:34pm While birding Mercer Wetlands the other evening, a small bird was flitting around the canopy and caught my eye. As I attempted to pish it down for further inspection, something large, brown and furry - definitely with four feet - came out from beneath the dense underbrush to see what was making this strange noise (that would be me). Fortunately, when it saw me, it quickly disappeared back into the bushes. I suspect it may have been one of the local muskrats or perhaps even a whistle-pig! At any rate, lesson learned: Be careful what you PISH for. You never know what might respond, especially during mating season! Meanwhile, I've been trying to relocate the Prothonotary Warbler which I hope has taken up summer residency in the area. Also been checking on ducklings - and the progress of our young mother Red-Shouldered Hawk. The good news is there is at least ONE white-feathered baby in the nest. It's interesting to see the behavioral changes in mom and dad. Very silent and elusive now that baby is born. Am pleased to see that the Green Heron seems to have claimed his territory near enough to the street that I can watch him on occasion. Also a nice look at a Waterthrush. It was deep in the shadows but he was singing and bobbling and looked/sounded more like the Louisiana Waterthrush than the Northern - but, wow, this one's tough. The trees have leaved out quite a bit, so it's harder to see what's really going on in there! I know the birds are enjoying the respite. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Mallard duckling rehab ? (Harris) From: Ted Theus <VTT(AT)PSSTF.COM> Date: 2 May 2008 6:33pm 2 out of 5 Mallard chicks which we hatched this week have foot deformities. We are still researching the issue but just wondering if anyone happens to have any experience with rehab of such problems. Eggs were rescued after the female who had lived at my parents' pond for many years was killed (most likely by a fox). Please respond directly to me (offline) with any suggestions. =20 =20 Ted Theus (Harris Co.) ********** To search GABO-L archives or manage your subscription, go to http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/gabo-l.html To contact a listowner, send message to GABO-L-request(AT)LISTSERV.UGA.EDU To view GABO-L information/guidelines, go to http://www.gos.org/gabo.html
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Toccoa Tattlers AWBB From: Mary Ellen Myers <memyers(AT)HEMC.NET> Date: 2 May 2008 9:25pm Four of us birded the Clarkesville-Toccoa area and broke our old record of 65 by seeing 79 species on April 30. We like to enjoy the day so started around 7:30 and finished the day around 5:00. We saw eleven kinds of warblers, but probably 100 Yellow-rumped warblers in Toccoa. Other highlights included several spotted sandpipers, a Semi-palmated Plover, and at least 15 Greater Yellowlegs, in a pond on Riverdale Rd. off Rte. 123 East of Toccoa. At Prather's bridge we saw a Yellow and a Prothonotary Warbler in the same tree, both on the Georgia side. Our carbon footprint was relatively small and the weather was perfect. Good luck to the other women as they go out tomorrow. Enjoy.
